Sara had brought two tents, and Gonzalez had brought his own, making three in total. The arrangement was set: Norah and Sara would share one, while Gonzalez and Adrian would each take a single.
As he hammered in the tent stakes, Gonzalez kept a constant, watchful eye on Norah.
It didn't take long for him to notice the girl who had tried to hit on him earlier approaching Norah. He couldn't hear what was said, but Norah suddenly broke into a brilliant, trusting smile.
He had a very bad feeling about this.
Sure enough, moments later, Norah was leading the girl right over to their campsite. "This is Lorelei," Norah announced cheerfully. "She's camping here too. I thought we should all introduce ourselves."
Lorelei offered Gonzalez a slow, exaggerated wink.
Gonzalez mentally cursed. *Norah, you naive little fool!*
Carrying a massive container of premium cherries, Lorelei enthusiastically pushed it toward the group. "Have some fruit and take a break. Anyone you meet out on the trail is a friend, so don't be shy!"
Sara politely declined. "Thanks, but we brought our own."
Ignoring the rejection, Lorelei grabbed a large handful and practically forced them into Norah's hands. "I'm obsessed with fruit, so my dad actually flew to Chile and bought an entire cherry orchard just for me. Eat as much as you want!"
"Thank you!" Norah accepted them gracefully.
Sara's lips twitched as she exchanged a knowing glance with Adrian. It was painfully obvious this girl was just aggressively flaunting her wealth to get Gonzalez's attention.
Lorelei seamlessly pivoted back to Norah, acting like they were best friends. "We're doing a seafood BBQ for lunch. We brought way too much fresh catch. You guys should totally join us!"
This time, before Norah could even open her mouth, Gonzalez shut it down. "No need. We brought our own lunch."
Faced with Gonzalez's blunt, unyielding rejection, Lorelei finally looked embarrassed. She forced a laugh. "Alright, well, after lunch, we should all go exploring! The scenery further up the mountain is stunning. We could even go bungee jumping or rafting."
"Thanks for the recommendation!" Norah replied warmly.
Lorelei waved goodbye and retreated to her own camp.
As soon as she was out of earshot, Gonzalez turned to Norah. "Stop inviting random strangers into our camp."
The slight tension from earlier finally evaporated.
Sara pulled out a bottle of red wine and poured a round of glasses. "Happy weekend, everyone. Cheers."
Norah reached for a glass, but Gonzalez's voice cut through the air. "You can't drink."
"A few sips won't kill me!" Norah argued, completely unfazed.
"Your leg is already healed up, right? Just have a little bit!" Sara chimed in with a laugh.
"She's still in the recovery phase. Absolutely no alcohol." The man left zero room for negotiation, casually leaning over to snatch the wine glass right out of Norah's hand.
Watching Norah fume in silence, Adrian couldn't hold back. "Who are you to dictate what Norah does? You're not actually her uncle!"
Gonzalez fixed Adrian with an icy glare. "She might not know what I am to her right now, but do you really want to pretend you don't know?"
