A cold fury radiated from Gonzalez as he marched straight toward Yvonne's room.
Stopping outside her door, he pounded on it forcefully.
A moment later, Yvonne opened the door, dressed in her silk robe. She wore a faint, nonchalant smile. "It's the middle of the night. Do you need something?"
A maid carrying a tray of bird's nest soup down the hall spotted him and immediately shrank back into the shadows, discreetly watching the half-siblings.
Everyone in the house knew they didn't get along, but based on Gonzalez's terrifying posture, it looked like a physical fight was about to break out.
Gonzalez's gaze was lethal. When he spoke, his rough voice was laced with a chilling intent. "Where is my cat?"
Yvonne had obviously anticipated this from the second she saw him. She leaned against the doorframe, her smile never wavering. "A friend of mine took a liking to him, so I gave him away."
"He is my cat," Gonzalez growled. "What gives you the right to give him away?"
Yvonne chuckled mildly. "It's just a cat. Do I not have a say in my own house? Besides, I did it for your own good. You just took over the company; your mind should be fully focused on your career. Keeping a pet is too much of a distraction."
The murderous glint in Gonzalez's eyes felt like blades flaying her skin. "I don't care who you gave Circe to. You're going to call her right now and have him brought back safely."
Yvonne rolled her eyes slightly, maintaining her unbothered facade. "That might be impossible. My friend had an eight o'clock flight to BL for an on-location shoot. She probably took him with her."
The air around Gonzalez plummeted to freezing. He stared her down. "I will say this one last time. Get Circe back here immediately."
"I'm telling you, it's impossible—Ah!"
Before she could finish, his hand shot out and clamped down on her throat. Instinctively, she clawed at his grip. "Let... let go... of me!"
The muscles in Gonzalez's arm bunched tightly as his fingers slowly constricted. "We had an understanding to stay out of each other's way, Yvonne. You touch what's mine, and I will kill you."
Simon glared furiously at his son. "Gonzalez, this is our home, not some lawless wasteland where you can do whatever you want! You can't just strangle people!"
"Why don't you ask Yvonne what she did?" Gonzalez retorted icily.
Yvonne kept her head down, still coughing, but her mind was racing. Hidden beneath the folds of her robe, she ruthlessly dug her freshly manicured acrylics into the back of her hand, dragging them down to create several deep scratches. She quickly rubbed the fabric over the bleeding skin to make the cuts look like older injuries.
Taking a shuddering breath, she extended her hand toward Simon and sobbed. "Dad, his cat scratched me. You said it yourself, if any animal in this house attacks someone, we can't keep it. It just so happened my friend came over and liked him, so I let her take him. That cat is totally feral. I was just worried he'd end up hurting Gonzalez too."
Hannah quickly grabbed Yvonne's hand, her reaction predictably theatrical. "Oh my god, look how deep these are!"
"They had stopped bleeding earlier tonight," Yvonne wept, "but they split wide open again when I was fighting for my life just now!"
Having spent years fighting as a mercenary and enduring countless injuries himself, Gonzalez immediately recognized the fresh, self-inflicted wounds for exactly what they were.
