Hannah asked frantically, "Did you get a rabies shot? Cats carry diseases, this could be fatal!"
Yvonne murmured, "It was too late. I was planning to go to the clinic first thing in the morning."
Hannah's voice grew hoarse with exaggerated concern. "Simon, we absolutely cannot keep an animal that attacks people! If it hurts someone once, it'll do it again. It's a menace!"
Simon nodded approvingly. "Yvonne made the right call. The cat is gone, and that's the end of it."
Gonzalez didn't say a word. He simply stalked toward Yvonne, step by slow, deliberate step.
Terrified by the predatory aura radiating from him, Yvonne scrambled backward on the floor. "What are you doing?"
He looked down at her with utter contempt. "I am getting my cat back. I don't care what anyone says. No one dictates what happens to my things! If Circe isn't back here tonight, you and your mother can pack your bags and get the hell out of this house."
Yvonne's eyes widened in horror, fresh tears spilling over her lashes as she turned to her father with a heartbroken look. "Dad! Aren't mom and I part of this family? He's trying to throw us out into the street over a stupid cat!"
Hannah dissolved into racking sobs. "I knew it! No matter how much I sacrifice, I'll always be an outsider. Even my own daughter is treated like nothing just because I have no standing in this house!"
"Gonzalez, stop intimidating your sister," Simon scolded, his brow deeply furrowed.
Gonzalez's features were carved from stone. "Then test me. See if I'm bluffing."
Without warning, he grabbed the collar of Yvonne's robe and dragged her toward the front door.
Yvonne screamed, thrashing wildly. All of her usual elegant poise vanished. Against his overwhelming physical strength, she was completely powerless, dragged along the floor like a ragdoll.
"Yvonne!" Hannah shrieked, chasing after them. "Gonzalez, let her go! I'm begging you!"
Gonzalez completely ignored her.
Hannah turned back to Simon, hysterical. "Simon, do something! He's really going to throw us out!"
The line rang four or five times before Maisie answered with a sleepy laugh. "Yvonne? Why are you calling so late?"
"Maisie," Yvonne said, her voice raspy. "Bring Circe back right now."
"What?" Maisie asked in shock. "You gave him to me! Why do I have to bring him back?"
Yvonne shot a nervous glance at Gonzalez and hissed into the receiver, "Just don't ask. Bring him back."
Maisie sounded deeply reluctant. "I'm already in bed. Can it wait until morning? I'll have my driver drop him off."
"Bring him now," Gonzalez ordered, his voice cutting clearly through the room.
Yvonne flinched violently. Frowning, she snapped at her friend, "Right now, Maisie! I don't care if you're asleep, get up! I'll be waiting for you."
