Norah got up and walked over, intending to just grab the crepe roll and leave. But to her surprise, Adrian turned directly to Jenny, who was standing beside him, and said, "Excuse me, could you move?"
Jenny awkwardly took a step back.
Adrian grabbed Norah's left wrist, pulling her to stand right next to him as he handed her the Taro Paste Crepe Roll. "Stop running around and eat first. I got this just for you."
Without even turning around, Norah could tell Jenny's expression had soured. She could feel the icy, glaring daggers aimed at the back of her head.
Taking a bite of the sweet roll, Norah lowered her voice. "Are you unhappy with my work performance today?"
Adrian looked confused. "No, why?"
"Then why are you trying to get me killed?" Norah muttered. "Jenny finally managed to stand next to you for a second, and you dragged me right back. If looks could kill, I'd be dead on the floor."
Adrian shot a sideways glance at Jenny and scoffed. "Since when do I need to care about someone else's feelings when I want to treat you well? Besides, you know damn well I don't like her. Stop trying to set us up. I pulled you back here to keep her away from me. You're a smart girl, how did you not catch onto that?"
Hearing Adrian's words, Norah was suddenly reminded of Gonzalez.
Gonzalez had said something incredibly similar to her before.
She let out a long sigh. "So I'm the one who has to play the villain!"
Adrian laughed. "I'll make it up to you. You pick where we eat tonight."
Norah shrugged. "Anything is fine. Ask the others."
"No need," Adrian said smoothly. "I already know what you like."
Norah took a large bite of her sweet taro roll and steered the conversation back to work.
The comment drew the attention of the surrounding colleagues. A few who knew about Norah's background and recognized how much Adrian valued her quickly jumped to her defense. "Norah's family just loves and cares for her. How does that make her a mama's girl? Jenny, that's a bit out of line."
Jenny rolled her eyes, unfazed. "It was just a joke. Why is everyone taking it so seriously?"
Norah just started packing up her things. "You guys enjoy the food. I'm going to head back to my desk to work for a bit."
A colleague who was on good terms with her immediately chimed in, "I'll come get you when it's time for dinner!"
Norah offered a polite smile and retreated to her office.
The rest of the group went back to their afternoon tea. Whether intentionally or not, nobody bothered to inform Jenny that Norah belonged to the powerful Lamont family of N City.
As for Jenny, her desire to room with Norah had absolutely nothing to do with friendship. She knew Norah was close to Adrian and merely wanted to use her as a stepping stone to get to the boss.
