Later that night, after dinner and karaoke with her coworkers, the Lamont family's chauffeur picked Norah up.
Because of her injured leg, she couldn't drive, so the driver had been shuttling her back and forth every day.
Sitting in the back seat, Norah suddenly recalled Jenny's comments.
It was true—she had never lived on her own. Even in college, she hadn't stayed in the dorms.
And if she really did move closer to the office, she wouldn't need the chauffeur anymore, nor would she have to wake up at the crack of dawn.
The idea suddenly became incredibly tempting.
When she arrived home, her grandmother, Catherine, was still waiting for her in the living room. Since Norah's leg was mostly healed, Janice Harper had gone back to focusing on her own busy career.
"You're back?" Catherine sat elegantly, wearing a long, cheongsam-style dress. She held a book in her hands, her reading glasses perched on her nose. A delicate gold chain dangled from the frames, adding to her refined, aristocratic aura.
Norah plopped onto the sofa and lazily rested her head on Catherine's shoulder. "Grandma."
"Tired?" Catherine set her book aside and reached up to gently massage the top of Norah's head. "Did you drink?"
"No, the others did."
Norah sniffed her sleeve. The smell of alcohol was definitely strong, but she hadn't touched a drop. She had wanted to, but for some reason, her mind had flashed to that camping trip when Gonzalez had stopped her from drinking. She had held back.
For the sake of her health, a little self-discipline was a good thing.
"You're working yourself to the bone so soon after starting, and you even have to go in on Saturdays," Catherine said, her voice laced with pity.
