After a long, heavy silence, Gonzalez looked straight at Jonathan. "This time, I swear to you, I will never hurt Norah again."
Jonathan slowly lifted his gaze, his tone dripping with skepticism. "That depends entirely on whether Norah even gives you the chance to hurt her."
Gonzalez kept his voice level. "If Estelle woke up one day and forgot you, do you really think she'd just fall in love with someone else?"
Jonathan's stare turned razor-sharp, but he didn't say a word.
Leaning back against his chair, Gonzalez frowned slightly, lost in a memory. "After Estelle came back from that mission with you, she actually mentioned you to me."
Jonathan instantly snapped his attention to him.
Gonzalez continued, "You know she's not much of a talker, but she opened up to me. I was practically her mentor, after all. Every now and then, she'd let me in on what was going through her head."
Jonathan tried to feign nonchalance. "What exactly did she say about me?"
Gonzalez suddenly pressed his lips together, staying deliberately quiet.
Jonathan's jaw tightened. "Fine. As long as Norah is happy, I won't interfere with whatever you two have going on."
Gonzalez let out a quiet chuckle, running his tongue over his back teeth. "It took her two whole months to recover from her injuries. When she finally got back to the training camp, we were chatting about the mission. She told me she had met someone... someone she would remember for the rest of her life."
Jonathan's eyes darkened with raw emotion. "What else did she say?"
Gonzalez rubbed his chin. "There was more, definitely... but my memory's a bit fuzzy. I'll let you know when it comes back to me."
Jonathan glared at him.
He let out a cold laugh. "I see what you're doing. You're holding Ella's past over my head so you don't have to show me proper respect when you inevitably try to marry into the family!"
Gonzalez shrugged, completely unfazed. "I'm already chasing her. Do you really think my pride cares about formalities at this point?"
Jonathan took a slow sip of tea. "Why didn't you figure this out sooner?"
Magdalen sounded completely flustered. "Ella, I came home tonight, ate a bowl of oats, and immediately threw it all up. I just took another test... I think I'm pregnant!"
Estelle froze. In the next second, her eyes lit up, and a gorgeous smile spread across her face. Terrified of startling her friend, she asked in a soft, breathless whisper, "Are you serious? Is it accurate?"
"I don't know! Based on the instructions, it's a positive!" Magdalen's voice was shaking.
Estelle tried to contain her overwhelming excitement. "Where's Morrison? Does he know?"
"He had a business dinner tonight, so he isn't back yet. I haven't even figured out how to tell him! You're the very first person I called!" Magdalen sounded almost frustrated. "I took a test just two days ago, and it was completely negative! How could it suddenly be positive?"
Estelle was over the moon. "Do you need to go to the doctor right now? I'll come pick you up!"
"No way!" Magdalen shot the idea down immediately. "I'm just pregnant, there's no need to cause a massive scene!"
Estelle was ecstatic, but completely clueless about what a pregnant woman actually needed. Her mind instantly flashed back to how severely sick Emily had been during her pregnancy. Panic started to set in. "How are you feeling right now? Are you still nauseous?"
