Once Circe finished eating, she didn't bother Norah at all. She batted a toy ball around the rug for a while before climbing back into Norah's lap to play with the buttons on her blouse.
An hour flew by. Norah finished all her tasks, and the cat's owner was still nowhere to be seen.
She closed her laptop and stood up to leave, but Circe, who had been dozing off, immediately snapped awake. She wrapped her little paws tightly around Norah's arm, staring up at her with massive, pitiful eyes.
Norah's heart melted in a second.
She sat back down, gently stroking the cat's soft head. "Okay, I won't leave. I'll stay until your owner gets back. Go to sleep."
...
Another hour passed. Gonzalez parked his car in the underground garage and took the elevator up.
When the doors chimed open on the twenty-seventh floor, his footsteps unconsciously slowed. He was still trying to figure out exactly how he was going to explain his presence here to her.
He unlocked the door and stepped inside. The moment his eyes landed on the pair of cream-colored heels sitting in the entryway, the dark intensity in his gaze melted into absolute softness.
Shrugging off his suit jacket and loosening his tie, he walked deeper into the apartment, only to freeze at the sight in the living room.
The lights were blazing. Norah was slumped against the armrest of the sofa, fast asleep, with Circe securely cradled in her arms.
The AC was blasting, and she must have felt the chill, because she was curled tightly into a ball, hugging the cat for warmth.
Stepping silently across the plush rug, Gonzalez approached the sofa and crouched down. Looking at her soft, relaxed face and slightly parted lips, his chest tightened with a surge of affection, followed quickly by a wave of pure amusement.
She definitely didn't know this was his apartment. Falling fast asleep in a total stranger's home? He was absolutely going to have to lecture her about this later.
Perhaps sensing the sudden, imposing presence looming over her, Norah's long eyelashes fluttered. Her groggy, sleep-filled eyes blinked open, staring blankly at the strikingly handsome man crouching right in front of her.
Their eyes locked. Gonzalez's lips curved into a faint smirk. "Awake?"
Norah's eyes snapped wide open. She bolted upright on the sofa, staring at him in utter shock. "You? What are you doing here?"
Circe tumbled out of Norah's lap, landing perfectly on her paws. She blinked sleepily at Gonzalez, then hopped right back onto Norah's lap, curled up, and went back to sleep.
