"Exactly," Gonzalez said, his voice low, magnetic, and full of careful guidance. "So why did you take her soup? By accepting it even once, you're silently validating her thoughts and letting her continue to misunderstand."
Norah bit her lip. "I get it now. I'll make things clear to Adrian next time and stop accepting things."
"Good." Gonzalez nodded in satisfaction, turning back to chop vegetables as he instructed, "Go play in the living room."
Norah walked out of the kitchen. Near the doorway, something seemed to cross her mind. She turned back, looking confused. "Gonzalez, aren't you an older guy too? What's your motive for treating me so well?"
Gonzalez stiffened slightly. A half-beat later, he turned his head and replied evenly, "To make sure you keep giving me lessons."
Norah gave a dry laugh. "You really don't pull your punches, do you?"
"There's no need to be fake with you," Gonzalez stated.
Norah looked into his fathomless dark eyes, her heart suddenly beating a little faster. She figured this must just be how Gonzalez was wired. Giving him a smile, she hugged Circe and headed back to the living room.
She had stopped by a pet store on the way home to buy some toys and clothes for Circe. She spent the next few minutes trying them on the cat one by one and snapping pictures.
Circe was fully cooperative, patiently letting her dress him up.
Just as she was putting on the last outfit, Gonzalez walked out holding two small plates.
Seeing the pink tutu on Circe, he didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Norah lifted Circe up for Gonzalez to see. "Does it look good?"
Gonzalez nodded. "As long as you like it."
Norah crinkled her eyes in a smile. "I'm sure it appeals to your clueless guy aesthetics."
"What exactly is a clueless guy aesthetic?" Gonzalez asked.
Norah thought about it. "You know, guys who like girls wearing pink, rhinestones, princess dresses—that kind of stuff."
She had almost joked about black lace, but given the man's serious expression, she didn't dare push it too far.
