Norah smiled, her eyes crinkling. "You're back!"
"Yeah," the man replied, his voice a bit heavy.
Ever since Gonzalez had run into Adrian and Sara at her place that day, he always knocked before coming over. He was probably afraid of running into someone else and causing a misunderstanding.
Gonzalez took a step inside and bent down to scoop up Circe. A heavy scent of alcohol washed over her—strong and mellow, but not mixed with anything unpleasant, so it wasn't repulsive.
Norah asked, "Did you drink a lot?"
The man's eyes were as dark as ever, showing no signs of intoxication. "I'm fine. Not drunk."
Norah laughed. "Drunk people always say that."
Gonzalez stared into her eyes and said softly, "Then come over and brew me some hangover tea."
Norah paused for a moment, then nodded. "Sure!"
She closed her door and followed Gonzalez to his apartment. As they walked in, the cool-toned decor of his place made the rainy night feel even more quiet and solitary.
Norah changed her shoes and headed straight for the kitchen. "Do you have any hangover tea packets?"
"Yes."
Gonzalez set Circe down in the living room and followed her into the kitchen. Stepping up behind Norah, he reached for the upper cabinet.
He leaned forward slightly, almost caging her in. The fine fabric of his shirt brushed lightly against her temple. Norah instinctively tensed and stepped to the left.
"Here." He handed her the packet, his gaze turning more intense before he took a step back.
Norah offered a casual smile. "Go rest for a bit. It'll be ready soon."
Afraid she would mind the smell of alcohol on him, Gonzalez gave a curt nod. "I'm going to take a shower."
Norah blinked. "Work stuff? I heard from Grandpa that you just came back to take over the Hanson family business."
Gonzalez didn't deny it. He simply lowered his eyes, his long lashes casting faint shadows over his sharp features.
Outside, the rain was still falling, the steady patter echoing through the walls.
Circe was nestled in Norah's arms, curled up lazily into a ball, sleeping soundly.
Norah leaned back against the sofa, offering encouragement. "Things will get better. When Adrian first joined his company, a lot of people tried to trip him up, even putting his life on the line. But now, he's kicked all those ambitious snakes out and secured his position."
At the mention of Adrian, a flash of cold irritation crossed Gonzalez's eyes. He lowered his gaze to hide it and asked flatly, "Did you have to put up with a lot of crap while working by his side?"
Norah stroked Circe's soft fur, a sweet smile playing on her lips. "Not really."
"Actually, in the beginning, it was Adrian's mom who came to me, asking me to go over and help him out."
