Catching the man's intense gaze, Norah completely misinterpreted his thoughts. She stroked Circe's head and laughed softly. "Are you just too mean to her normally?"
Ever since Norah arrived, the cat hadn't paid him any attention at all! Circe was obviously much more affectionate with her.
Under the soft lighting, the young woman's pure face held a lively, captivating charm. Gonzalez's eyes darkened, and he spoke in a low drawl. "It doesn't matter. She's just wandering off for a little while. At the end of the day, she's still mine."
"Yep, she's yours. No one is stealing her away!" Norah joked playfully, looking down to underline a sentence in her book.
Keeping his eyes on the page, he muttered softly, "As long as she comes back, I promise I won't be mean to her."
"Hmm?" Norah didn't quite catch the double meaning.
But Gonzalez didn't elaborate. Acting as if the casual chat was over, he returned his focus to the textbook.
By ten o'clock, Gonzalez went into the kitchen, warmed a glass of milk, and handed it to her. "Drink up, then head back and get some sleep."
Norah moved Circe to the sofa, stretched lazily, and took a huge gulp of the milk. "Alright, I'm heading out. You get to bed early, too!"
"No binge-watching shows, and no staying up playing games. Go straight to sleep. You have work tomorrow," he ordered smoothly.
"Yeah, yeah," she mumbled between sips, secretly thinking he wouldn't know what she did once she was in her own apartment anyway.
She finished the milk, set the empty glass on the coffee table, and packed up her things.
"See you tomorrow!" she called out, waving at him as she stood by the door slipping on her shoes.
Gonzalez nodded. "Goodnight."
Watching the door click shut behind her, the man turned back into the room. He took the empty glass to the kitchen to wash it. The faint scent of milk lingered on the rim, incredibly similar to her natural sweet scent.
Gonzalez placed the clean glass on the drying rack. Leaning back against the counter, he pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
The pale smoke drifted into the air as the familiar taste filled his lungs. His harsh, solitary features softened in the late-night shadows.
