"I haven't been able to sleep since that night."
"Do I look terrible?"
Norah blinked in surprise. Weren't his eyes closed? How did he know she was staring?
A rush of warmth hit her cheeks. At the same time, his words made her heart skip a beat.
Gonzalez cracked his eyes open, looking at her through his thick lashes. "But now... I finally feel somewhat grounded."
Norah let out a sudden, breathless laugh. "If being friends grounds you, then we were already friends. Why go through all this drama?"
In the dim lighting of the backseat, he turned his head to look at her. His gaze was impossibly dark, his voice dropping to a smooth, magnetic pitch. "Why do you think?"
His eyes were like a vortex; she knew if she stared too long, she would get pulled under. She turned her attention back to the window and mumbled, "Because you brought it on yourself."
Gonzalez closed his eyes again, a faint smile playing on his lips. "You're right. I definitely brought it on myself."
Life had handed him the ultimate cheat code to start at the top, but he had stubbornly chosen to grind his way up from the very bottom.
When they reached the twenty-seventh floor, Norah stopped in the hallway. "Can you let go now?"
He didn't release her hand. "Don't you want to see Circe?"
Norah pressed her lips together, staying silent.
"You barely ate at the banquet. I'll make you a late-night snack, and you can play with the cat," Gonzalez offered, his tone softening into a gentle coaxing.
When she didn't argue, he took it as a yes and pulled her straight into his apartment.
The moment she stepped inside, Norah remembered her outfit. "I need to go change my clothes."
Gonzalez finally dropped her hand. "Hurry back."
"Yeah," she agreed softly, slipping out the door.
It had ruined her appetite and her sleep schedule!
Well, looking at Gonzalez, it seemed someone else had suffered the exact same symptoms.
Norah scooped Circe up into her arms, whispering into her twitching ear. "I'm back to steal your treats!"
"No need to steal. I bought double," a deep voice chuckled from behind her.
Norah whipped around, blushing furiously. "I—I was just joking with her."
Gonzalez leaned against the counter, eyeing her intently. "Are you going to steal anything else?"
"Like what?" Norah raised an eyebrow.
"Well," he drawled, "snacks come in pairs, but there's only one man of the house. No need to steal. I'm exclusively yours, not hers."
Norah: "..."
