When Gonzalez returned home, the first thing he noticed was the elegant invitation resting on the coffee table. He picked it up, gave it a brief glance, and then turned toward the kitchen.

The girl was busy preparing dinner for Circe, mashing up a can of wet food and mixing it into the dry kibble. She had even added a dash of homemade tomato juice, turning the whole concoction into something that looked like a culinary disaster.

She was already flustered, and with the cat weaving between her legs causing trouble, the kitchen looked like a scene of absolute chaos.

Yet, standing in the doorway, Gonzalez felt an overwhelming sense of warmth wash over him. Every expression that crossed her face was vibrant and endearing. He watched in silence for a moment before stepping forward. "Let me do it."

Norah had been so focused that she hadn't heard him come in. She jumped, spinning around in surprise. "When did you get back?"

"Just now."

He carried the heavy, musky scent of alcohol, and his voice was a notch deeper, rich and rough-hewn. He grabbed a paper towel and gently wiped a smear of tomato juice from her finger.

Norah pulled her wrist free from his warm grip, suddenly flustered. "I'll just wash it!"

She quickly pivoted to the sink, using the running water as an excuse to escape the sudden, breathless tension his proximity always sparked in her.

"If I come home late from now on, just have Ms. Simmons come over to feed Circe," Gonzalez said smoothly. "If she's not around, just play with the cat and leave the food for me to do when I get back."

The water rushed loudly over her hands. Norah stared blankly at the sink for a second, lost in thought, before turning off the faucet and looking back over her shoulder with a small smile. "It's fine. I'm actually getting pretty good at it."

She sounded so serious, but Gonzalez couldn't help but picture the frantic mess she had been making just moments before. A soft chuckle escaped him.

He set the finished bowl on the floor for Circe and casually asked, "You're going to the Chambers family's birthday banquet this weekend?"

Norah knew he had seen the invitation. She nodded. "Yeah. I already know Grandpa Chambers, so even if Adrian hadn't given me my own invitation, I would have gone with my family."

A thought struck her, and she looked up. "Are you going?"

Gonzalez's dark eyes locked onto hers, his gaze intense. "I wasn't planning to. But since you'll be there, I suppose I will too."

Norah's eyes darted away. "What does that have to do with me? There will be hundreds of people there. Even if you go, we might not run into each other."

His voice dropped lower, carrying a slow, deliberate edge. "If I want to see you, I'll make sure I see you."
