Later that afternoon, Zane called Jenny into his office and firmly closed the door. "I looked into it. The reason Hanson Corporation suddenly changed project leads is because Trevor Cromwell was fired."
Jenny stared at him in shock. "How is that possible?"
A man in Trevor's position wasn't just let go without warning.
"I haven't been able to dig up the internal details yet, but it sounds like Trevor might be in massive trouble," Zane said, a heavy frown on his face.
Jenny felt a creeping sense that something was very wrong, though she couldn't piece it together. The information she had access to was far too limited.
Zane's expression was grim. "Do you realize the core issue here?"
"What issue?" Jenny asked.
"Trevor was blocking our path. We were both racking our brains trying to figure out how to kiss his ass and get him on our side," Zane explained slowly. "Norah's solution was to just eliminate him."
Jenny sucked in a sharp breath, her face turning pale. "No way. Norah doesn't have that kind of power. Trevor getting fired has to be a coincidence!"
Zane shook his head. "Fired at this exact, critical juncture? Do you honestly believe in coincidences like that?"
Jenny still refused to believe it—or perhaps she just didn't want to.
Zane simply lowered his voice. "I'm going to keep asking around to find out exactly why he was axed. But in the meantime, do not provoke Norah. I'm transferring out of the marketing department next month. If something happens, I won't be here to protect you."
He knew perfectly well that Jenny was mostly just using him, but he still hovered around her, desperate for her approval and hoping she might finally look his way.
Jenny scoffed, unimpressed. "I don't buy it. What could she possibly do to me?"
Zane tried to reason with her patiently. "Remember that business dinner? You went out of your way to make things difficult for her, and she didn't retaliate. But the moment company interests were on the line, she didn't give an inch. That shows her character and her vision. You need to look at the bigger picture and focus on your career. You're smart. You'll definitely achieve great things if you apply yourself—"
"Enough!" Jenny snapped, flushing with anger and embarrassment. "If you think Norah is so amazing, why don't you go after her instead?"
