"That was the night you called me?" Norah asked, shocked.
Gonzalez nodded. At the time, he hadn't known exactly what Hannah was planning, but fearing he might never see Norah again, he just wanted to hear her voice one last time. He had initially wanted to ask her to come to the Hanson estate, but he couldn't form the words.
"I actually knew something was wrong, but I didn't go to you!" Norah said, overwhelmed with regret.
Gonzalez reached out and gently smoothed her hair. "I don't blame you."
It had been the middle of the night; she couldn't be expected to rush over to the Hanson family home based on a cryptic phone call.
Norah was still heartbroken. "If I had gone, maybe her scheme wouldn't have succeeded."
"Norah, let's not regret the past, alright?" Gonzalez looked at her, his gaze deep and steady.
Norah nodded. She knew regretting it now was useless; the priority was figuring out how to expose Hannah and Yvonne!
"If she tells you to leave, you just leave?" Norah scoffed, a huff of angry air escaping her lips. "Since when did you become such a pushover?"
Gonzalez looked at her, his striking, sharp features softening with incredible tenderness. "I don't care about my reputation. I was just afraid that if you found out, you would be disgusted with me."
Coupled with the fact that he had seen her attending the Chambers family dinner at the hotel that day, he had suddenly felt a suffocating wave of despair. His past was riddled with scars, and his future would likely be met with even more contempt and scorn. How could he bear to drag her down to face the harsh judgment of the world with him?
Norah's heart ached with a warm, fierce protective instinct. She leaned up slightly, taking his face in both hands. Her misty eyes stared directly into his, as if trying to look straight into his soul, to scatter the dark clouds within him and bathe him completely in her light.
She took the initiative, capturing his lips in a lingering, tender kiss.
The man closed his eyes. Almost instantly, he took control. The kiss became as fervent as the man himself, exploding out of a lifeless void. It was a scorching heat that threatened to ignite her from the inside out.
She was so pure, so radiant; she shouldn't have to be tainted by all this filth.
Norah's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "You weren't willing to share the bad times with me. That means you still didn't trust me."
