Sara walked out of the bathroom, drying her hair with a towel. She crouched down, picked up the broken buttons from the floor, and held them out to him. "Don't sweat it. Two adults got drunk and slept together. It happens."
Adrian glanced at her outstretched hand but didn't take them. "I'm not as easy as you."
She shrugged. "Then all I can say is I'm sorry. If it bothers you this much, we just won't see each other again."
She was leaving the country anyway.
Without another word, Adrian turned and headed for the door.
As he passed the living room, he caught sight of something on the coffee table. He paused, suddenly remembering the item that had been burning a hole in his pocket all night.
*
Sara waited a few minutes after he left before stripping the bed and tossing the sheets into the washing machine.
Walking back through the living room, her eyes zeroed in on the coffee table.
The cigarette pack she had left there last night had been replaced. It was a brand new, unopened pack of women's menthols.
She picked it up, her fingers slowly tightening around the sleek box.
In her other hand, she was still clutching the two pearlescent shirt buttons.
...
Just as she was heading out the door for work, her phone rang. It was Khloe.
"Sara... I'm so sorry," Khloe stammered. "Adrian explained everything to me yesterday. I went home and really thought about it. I was way too rash. I hope you can forgive me. I want us to still be friends."
Sara pressed the elevator button, a dry chuckle escaping her lips. "Your apology is a little too late for that."
Khloe paused. "What do you mean? You won't forgive me?"
"No," Sara replied flatly, watching the elevator numbers ascend. "I mean I already did exactly what you accused me of. I slept with him."
There was dead silence on the line. Then, Khloe's vicious hiss cut through the speaker. "You absolute bit—"
Sara ended the call before she could finish. The elevator doors chimed open, and she stepped inside.
Estelle chuckled, glancing at Janice. "He just didn't want to call me Auntie Estelle."
Janice laughed in understanding.
Just then, Norah bounded down the stairs, a trace of panic in her eyes. "Mom!"
Janice smiled soothingly. "What are you so scared of? With Estelle here, do you really think I'd make things difficult for him?"
Norah shot Gonzalez a look, pressing her lips together in a stifled smile. "Mr. Hanson is here. He's in Grandpa's study with my dad and Uncle Jonathan. You should go in."
Realizing what was happening, Gonzalez gave a firm nod and strode toward the study.
Simon Hanson had come personally to propose the engagement on his son's behalf.
Geoffrey Lamont was genuinely floored. In his eyes, the two ran in entirely different circles. He never would have guessed they were romantically involved.
"Dad, Alcott," Jonathan admitted smoothly, "I actually knew about this for a while. I should have said something."
He elaborated, "Norah fell for him first, but Gonzalez felt the gap in their age and social circles was too wide, so he turned her down. It wasn't until after Norah's accident that they slowly found their way back to each other."
