The busy day passed in a flash. That evening, Marina grabbed dinner downstairs near her office and didn't get back to the apartment until nine o'clock.
The place wasn't overly large—around fifteen hundred square feet, with two bedrooms and a study.
Since she was only a temporary guest, Marina obviously didn't want to occupy Carson's private study. Instead, she set up a desk and chair in the nook between the living room and the balcony to serve as her makeshift workspace.
After a hot shower, she changed into comfortable loungewear and sat at her computer to review some files.
"So busy that you're still working after you get home?"
A clear, elegant male voice echoed through the living room. Marina slowly looked up, and only when she saw the man's striking face did she remember the phone call she had made that morning.
She had been so swamped all day that it had completely slipped her mind.
Taking off her blue-light glasses, Marina stood up. "A college friend asked me to help translate a document."
Carson walked over to the fridge and opened it. Seeing the neat, colorful rows of pre-mixed cocktails inside, he raised an eyebrow in amusement before grabbing a bottle of water.
Marina stepped out of the guest bedroom holding a small sealed bag and placed it on the table. "Your company has a dedicated tech division. Could you have them find out what this thing does?"
Carson walked over, picked up the tiny black button, and examined it. "Where did you find this?"
"In our family's doghouse," Marina answered honestly.
A dark, knowing smirk tugged at the corner of Carson's lips.
Marina shrugged with a wry smile. "Honestly, I have a pretty good guess of what it does. I just want to confirm it. If you can pull any detailed data off it, even better."
Carson nodded. "Consider it done. I'll take it with me and give you an answer tomorrow."
"Thank you," Marina said earnestly.
Carson picked up his car keys. "I'll head out then."
Marina walked him to the door just as his phone rang. He answered it on speaker.
