Marina shoved at him in a panic. In the darkness, the man's tone was entirely innocent. "I washed up!"
Sure enough, the stench of alcohol was gone. He had changed his clothes, and the fresh scent of body wash lingered on his skin, mixed with his signature faint aroma of sandalwood.
For a man who practically lived in the neon-lit world of high society nightlife, he always carried that clean, elegant sandalwood scent. The contrast never failed to baffle her.
"I really took a shower," Carson repeated, his voice thick with sleepy exhaustion. He tugged at her sleeve. "I don't want to do anything. I just want to lay with you for a bit."
In the dim light, Marina scrutinized his face. "Are you dealing with a broken heart or something?" she asked, genuinely confused.
Had that girl from tonight, Giselle Monet, rejected him?
Carson opened his eyes, staring deeply at her before suddenly chuckling. "You haven't broken off our engagement yet. Who else would I be heartbroken over?"
Marina almost blurted out Giselle's name but stopped herself just in time.
Hearing his calm tone, Marina felt a sudden tightness in her chest.
She turned on her side to look at him, suddenly understanding his erratic behavior today. She fell silent, unsure of how to comfort him.
Carson grabbed her hand and pressed it over his eyes. "I envy you," he whispered. "Your parents love each other, and you're their only child."
Marina scoffed softly. "And I envy that your mother defends you unconditionally."
Carson let out a soft laugh. "Then marry me, and you won't have to be jealous anymore."
Her palm was still resting over his eyes. As he spoke, his lips brushed against her wrist. The faint, warm moisture made her pulse skip, and she fought the urge to yank her hand away.
He held on tight, murmuring with a heavy, sleep-laced voice, "Don't go."
Marina sighed, her thumb unconsciously brushing against his cheek. "Go to sleep. Things will look better in the morning."
Marina dreamed she was sucked into her own manga world. Pursued by zombies, she was backed up to a cliff edge before slipping and falling into the ocean. Tangled in the kelp, she couldn't break free. Just as she finally wriggled loose, a mutated octopus wrapped its tentacles tightly around her leg.
The creature's slimy appendages slithered up her thigh, coiling firmly around her waist, while another tentacle draped itself brazenly over her chest.
It was a downright perverted octopus!
Ignoring the revulsion, she opened her mouth and bit down hard. The tentacle reeled back in pain, but quickly wrapped around her arms instead, dragging her down into the crushing depths.
The ocean floor was pitch-black, save for a massive sinkhole that looked like the gaping maw of a sea monster, waiting to devour them whole.
Both she and the octopus were sucked toward the edge of the abyss. The freezing temperature sent a violent, terrified shiver down her spine.
But no matter how hard she fought, she was helplessly dragged into the black hole.
Marina bolted awake with a gasp.
