Marina was about to fire back that he had been sleeping in *her* bed, but before the words could leave her mouth, she caught herself and snapped her jaw shut.
Living under the same roof meant they were bound to provoke each other endlessly. "Don't you usually have breakfast with your mom in the mornings?" she reminded him. "You haven't been home in days. She's definitely missing you."
"Funny you should mention that." Carson stepped up right behind her, taking her bag from her hands. He flashed a devilishly handsome grin. "My mom explicitly told me she doesn't need my company right now and that I should spend all my free time with you."
"How does she even know we're together?" Marina asked, stunned.
"Your mom called mine to thank me for taking care of you."
Marina was speechless.
Her mother and the rest of the family knew about the car accident. Rhiannon had called her, urging her to move back home so they could look after her, but Marina hadn't wanted to go back. She had downplayed the injuries and mentioned that Carson was taking excellent care of her.
She never expected her mother to actually call Mrs. Foster!
Marina turned her head slightly, her delicate features setting into a stubborn line. "Well, thanks for the help, but I don't need it anymore."
"Tossing me aside now that you're feeling better, huh?" He leaned down, effortlessly capturing her lips for a brief kiss, his voice dropping into a husky register. "But the waters ahead are still rough. You're definitely going to need me."
Marina normally wouldn't have read too much into it, but his profound, lingering gaze and ambiguous tone made it impossible not to.
She bit her lower lip. Knowing that exchanging sarcastic remarks right now would get her nowhere, she simply yanked the door open and marched out.
Carson chuckled softly and followed right behind her.
When the elevator doors slid open, there was already a girl inside. Seeing the two of them step in, she took a polite step back and offered a bright, excessively cute greeting. "Hi! I'm Lucy Rhodes. I just moved in upstairs!"
The girl was dressed in full Lolita fashion, her huge eyes accentuated by light blue color contacts. With her luminous skin and flawless makeup, she looked like she had just stepped out of an anime. In her arms, she cradled a fluffy silver Chinchilla cat.
Marina offered a polite smile. "Nice to meet you."
Lucy's gaze locked onto Carson, lingering for several long seconds before her eyes widened in exaggerated awe. "Wow, he's absolutely gorgeous!"
Carson barely glanced at her. Instead, he wrapped his fingers securely around Marina's hand, a faint, self-satisfied smirk playing on his lips. "Thanks. My girlfriend will be thrilled to hear that."
