When Marina finally woke up the next day, the sun was already high in the sky. She opened her eyes, sat up abruptly, and her expression shifted rapidly from panic to sheer confusion.
The familiar layout of the room made her brain short-circuit. She stared blankly.
The Riverside Apartments?
Why was she here?
Last night... someone had knocked her out, and she had been unconscious ever since.
Was Carson the one who attacked her?
Why would he kidnap her and bring her here?
She looked down and saw that her clothes were completely intact, and she was alone in the room.
The spot on her neck where she'd been struck throbbing the moment she moved. She noticed a faint medicinal smell; her skin felt slightly sticky, like someone had applied an ointment for bruises.
What was going on?
Marina frantically looked around for her phone and spotted it on the nightstand. She quickly grabbed it.
Before she could even turn it on, the doorbell rang.
She scrambled out of bed, stepped into the hallway, and cautiously scanned the apartment. Carson was nowhere to be seen.
Then who had brought her here?
The urgent ringing of the doorbell snapped her out of her racing thoughts. She hurried over and unlocked the door.
It was Erin.
The moment the door opened, Erin's eyes welled up with tears. She threw herself at Marina, pulling her into a desperate hug. "You scared the absolute hell out of me! I didn't sleep a wink last night."
"Look at my dark circles!" Erin pointed at her eyes dramatically.
Marina tilted her head, squinting. "Where?"
