The project resumed smoothly. Even the clients who had terminated their contracts with her company called to apologize, lowering their demands and begging to restart their partnerships. The two clients that Charlotte had poached came crawling back as well.

Charlotte had been overly eager for quick success. To steal the clients, she had only secured verbal agreements before initiating massive production runs. Now that the clients had bolted, she had no sales channels and faced a barrage of complaints from her husband.

Word was that Charlotte was so furious she needed oxygen support.

Late that afternoon, Marina received a call from Carson.

"I was cleaning out the apartment and found one of your sketchbooks. Come pick it up."

Marina was slightly startled. She had indeed been missing a sketchbook—it must have been left at The Riverside Apartments.

"Could you have someone mail it to my office?" she asked coolly.

"I don't have time," Carson replied.

Carson sounded impatient. "Either come get it now, or I'm throwing it out."

Marina bit her lip. Checking the time, her shift was over anyway. "Fine, I'm heading over."

"I'll be waiting." Carson didn't bother with small talk and hung up.

Marina packed her things, went downstairs, and drove to the apartments.

She drove down the same streets she used to take every day after work. The familiar roads and storefronts made it feel as though the past were only yesterday.

When she arrived, the apartment door was ajar, and she could hear voices inside.
