Cars were zooming down the wide road.
Jonathan's heart was racing, thoughts flashing through his mind as fast as the rapidly changing scenery before him. He tried to keep a lid on his panic, but the fear had already spread through his body, beyond his control. It was as if a net had dropped down over his head, trapping him with no way out.
Ever since he saw that marriage certificate, he knew things had gotten out of hand. He had to find Estelle and hear everything straight from her!
He kept dialing Estelle's number, but her phone was always off, and Manley's phone had been unreachable since he hung up.
The whole of J City had turned into a cage full of unknowns, and he felt like an animal trapped inside, unable to find an exit.
Finally, his car pulled up to Villa del Sol.
Villa del Sol was his own design, and he hadn't been back since he got hitched to the Macclain family.
But he knew his wife Estelle had lived here for three years, up until their divorce last year. Wilma had told him she'd moved out.
At Villa del Sol, a Samoyed dog was lying on the lawn. As soon as it saw him, it stood up alertly, then seemed to freeze, staring at him.
He strode in, and Wilma and Mr. Wagner both came out.
"Mr. Lamont, long time no see!" Wilma said cheerfully.
Jonathan looked at the villa that felt both familiar and strange. Had Estelle really lived here for three years? Was that Estelle the same Estelle who was with him?
Why did everything feel so unbelievable?
"Estelle," Jonathan started in a low voice, "has she come back since she moved out?"
"Yes, she did!" Wilma answered instantly. "She often comes back to visit us and Max."
"Max?" Jonathan glanced at the dog trailing behind him.
"About three years." Wilma said.
"What did she usually do?" Jonathan continued.
"Estelle's life was actually quite simple. She would go to class every day, come back to spend time with Max or do homework. If she had time in the morning or evening, she would go for a run. Oh, and she really loved sweets. She often went to the dessert shop on the corner of Maple Street. She was good friends with a girl there named Emily." Wilma said.
Emily.
Jonathan's heart clenched.
No more doubts. The woman he married was Estelle!
Why had she kept it a secret from him? Why had she appeared before him as a stranger?
So many questions, like fog in front of him, obscured his vision. Some things seemed clear, but when he tried to think it through, it was all a haze.
