The stairwell corner was filled with familiar faces. These were families ranked in the top ten of Litchbrook’s elite circle. Every person there came from generations of people who had always been close
to power.
But even this group, each one important on its own, seemed dull next to Austin. They were nothing more than his backdrop.
Looks aside from status, he was striking. He resembled David a little, but the rest was a maturity and edge that David could never reach.
He carried a natural sense of distance and authority that made him feel like the moon above the stars, out
of reach.
If it had been yesterday, Alicia would have gotten up to greet him. But after giving up on him, she stayed in her lazy pose and didn’t move.
Her eyes met his for a moment before she turned to look at the escort peeling grapes for her.
The escort flushed under her steady gaze. He had been trained like an escort, but since this was his first job and he lacked experience, he grew embarrassed. He asked quietly, “Alicia, does it taste good?”
“It’s alright.”
Still red, he leaned closer with more courage. “Alicia, I’m actually better than grapes.”
Alicia let out a soft laugh. “I can tell.”
Caught in her smiling eyes, his heart skipped a beat.
Men in his line of work did it for money. Compared to older women with sagging bodies, he would rather have a pretty, rich young woman as his patron.
And Alicia did have the charm to pull any man in.
Seeing that she wasn’t pushing him away, the escort said boldly, “Do you want to take me with you? I know a lot of tricks.”
“How many?” a man’s amused voice cut in.
Betty’s expression shifted for a second, but when she turned, she was smiling.
“Mr. Cooper, what brings you here?”
Before she could say more, Liam wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her in. He said teasingly, “Bebe, when you asked me to back you up, you didn’t say you’d let this kind of thing in.”
Betty had been with Liam for five years. Just seven days earlier, she had slapped him at his own matchmaking dinner. Their breakup had become public knowledge in their circle.
Everyone had been waiting to see the drama, but on her opening night, Liam showed up with a group of

powerful men to support her.
It didn’t look like revenge. It looked more like he was saying she still belonged to him.
Alicia saw his possessive behavior and smirked.
Men were all the same trash.
David was like that, and Liam was no different, either.

There was nothing wrong with dating before marriage. If a man could break up cleanly, that was still respectable, but these men wanted the best of both worlds–their arranged marriages on the surface and the women they liked on the side.
Calling it love while keeping a woman trapped and labeling her a mistress was exactly what Alicia despise
Betty knew his plan. That was why she had slapped him in front of everyone, hoping to cut things off. However, his actions now showed he still wanted to hold on.
Not wanting to cause a scene. Betty forced a polite smile. Alicia suddenly spoke up. “Mr. Cooper, are you serious? People come to nightclubs to have fun. If there’s no fun, then maybe you should just open a library instead.”
Everyone turned and saw her in a black dress. The slit in her dress showed long, fair legs crossed neatly. She looked stunning
The escort quickly picked up her high heels from the floor and slipped them onto her ankle like they wer
treasures.
No one noticed a cold gaze fixed on his fingers touching her ankle.
“Bebe, aren’t you going to introduce us?”
Alicta stood up, pulled Berry out of Liam’s arms, and said flatly, “Alicia Gibson.”
“So, it’s Ms. Gibson, huh. I’ve heard Bebe mention you many times. Nice to finally meet you. Since you’re Iner frend, why not join us?”
Aba folded her fan and sat back down. “I don’t mind.”
Berry looked at the man who had been quiet the whole time, but impossible to ignore. “This gentleman looks unfamiliar. Who might you be?”
Austin finally pulled his eyes from Alicia and sat down beside her.
The moment he sat, his presence filled the air so much it felt hard to breathe.
His voice was calm and distant. “Austin Burton.”
The Burton family?
In Litchbrook, any name with Burton was a sign of power.

As everyone sat down, some people glanced at Alicia. The first to speak was Austin. “Ms. Gibson, what a coincidence. We meet again.”
Liam caught the hint of gossip. “Oh? Austin, do you and Ms. Gibson know each other well?”
Alicia moved slightly away from him. “Not really. We just had one meal together.”
Austin didn’t explain further. He rubbed the platinum ring on his finger, and Liam’s sharp eyes cauriti
“Austin, are you getting married soon?” Liam clicked his tongue.
“You can think of it that way,” Austin replied without denying it.
