“Holy crap. Uncle Austin, you actually brought a woman home? Did the sun rise in the middle of the nigh or what? Come on. lemme see which girl managed to crack that frozen statue of a heart of yours.”
Instead of backing off, the boy leaned in, curious.
Alicia, meanwhile, felt like she was being dangled over the edge with nothing solid to stand on. If this didn’t work out, she’d be the Gibson Family heiress whose name went down the drain.
So she tucked her head against Austin’s chest and whispered, “Austin.”
He caught on to her worry, shot the boy a sharp glare, and barked, “Get your ass back to your room. Stare any longer and I’ll pop your eyeballs out and crush them under my boot.”
“Savage!”
Austin reached down and ruffled her hair only after the boy slammed his door shut. “He’s gone.”
Alicia already had a good guess about the kid. “He’s Grady Burton, from the second wife’s side of the family, isn’t he?”
Austin gave her a long look, one that carried a warning. “Don’t even think about it. He hasn’t had his birthday yet.”
Alicia just stared, feeling like her whole head was full of question marks.
So I’ve got zero standards now? As long as he’s from the Burton Family, that’s all it takes?
After that little interruption, Alicia’s head felt much clearer, and whatever tension was brewing between them just fizzled out.
“I’ll call a driver to take the car. I’m heading back first.”
“I’ll walk you out.”
“Alright.”
She pushed the door open, her heels clicking unevenly against the floor, and her steps were not as steady as she wanted them to be. Austin watched her for a beat, then reached out.
“Careful.” His hand closed around hers. She hesitated momentarily, ban his fingers slipped between hers and locked tight until their hands were fully laced together.
Alicia turned her head, catching the reflection of her own dazed expression in his dark eyes. For a fleeun moment, she thought she saw something soffer there, a trace of longing that didn’t belong to him.
But Austin wasn’t a man she could read. Behind those eyes was a pull like a black hole. It was deep and dangerous. Her instincts told her to keep away
