Chapter 33 Meeting the Burtons

She quickly grabbed her phone and sent a morning message.

Why didn’t you wake me up?

I tried, but you wouldn’t wake up. You were like a dead log, replied Target Client.

Maybe it was because things had finally slowed down. Her body seemed determined to catch up on all the sleep it had missed.

She was about to reply when Tasha’s call came through.

Alicia, would you be free to come over for a drink today?

Sure, Mrs. Burton.

She had agreed that night, so there was no reason to refuse.

Later on at the Burton Residence, Aria seemed to have learned her lesson.

She was no longer flashy. She wore a beige dress and had much lighter makeup.

She was just an inch or so shorter than Alicia at around five feet, and so slim that the dress struggled to fit.

In heels, she looked like a long, skinny green bean from a distance.

Alicia, also in a similar dress, had curves in all the right places, leaving Aria in the dust.

Aria rolled her eyes, but unlike last time, she didn’t spout anything brash.

Tasha stepped forward to warmly greet Alicia.

Just in time. I got some premium black tea from an older tree. Let’s give it a try.

Alicia smiled graciously. Perfect, I’m lucky today.”

Though the tea was meant for two, Tasha’s eyes stayed on Alicia, making Aria feel uneasy.

You should have some tea to wake up, sister.

Tasha finally noticed Aria’s sly tone. What do you mean?

Madam Steele, Alicia didn’t come home all night. She was probably out at a friend’s club again. She must be exhausted.

Aria hit a sore spot. Tasha’s eyes flicked to Alicia, her expression softening. She still likes going to nightclubs?

Alicia smiled. A friend recently opened a new shop, so I went to support her. Honestly, I don’t enjoy noisy places like that.

That’s odd. If you didn’t go to the nightclub last night, why were you out all night? Do you have a boyfriend?

Aria’s eyes sparkled with mischief. She couldn’t wait to see Alicia squirm.

Thanks for your concern. A friend of mine had a breakup. I stayed at her place last night. Sorry to make you worry.

Her calm, composed tone left no cracks. Tasha wasn’t naive. She assumed Aria was trying to stir trouble and grew to admire Alicia’s grace even more.

Compared to her, Aria looked petty and smallminded.

In the tea room, Alicia immediately spotted the two men playing chess.

That broad, upright back, facing away from her, was etched into her memory.

Across from Austin, the old man lifted his eyes to glance at them, murky eyes flashing a hint of sharpness.

He would not be easy to deal with.

Dad, these are Alicia and Aria, daughters of the Gibson family. They’ve come over for tea today,Tasha introduced.

Knowing who they were, Aria rushed to flatter the old man.

Old Mr. Burton, my grandfather always praised your chess skills.

Steven glanced at her. Can you play?

She had no idea how to play chess. She’d dozed off in her lessons and eventually stopped going.

I know just a little, nothing amazing like my sister. She’s really good.”

Aria took the opportunity to push Alicia forward. Steven’s gaze landed on Alicia. Can you play?

Aria smirked, eager to see her stumble. Alicia gave a faint smile. I know a bit, but I’m no match for you.

Alicia is really modest,Aria taunted, trying to stir trouble.

Steven tossed aside his piece. Perfect timing. I’m about to lose. Ms. Gibson, try your hand. Let’s see if you can beat this disrespectful young man.”

Austin’s cold gaze observed Alicia as if they were strangers. Dad, how can you just tap out midgame?

It was just for fun.

Alicia got pushed forward. Steven looked at Aria. As for you, come taste some tea with me.”

It seems Steven wanted a private interview.

Alicia’s goal wasn’t David anyway. She just wanted to give Aria a false impression.
