Her mother blocked Arthur's hand and pulled Lydia close. "You have no right to hit her!"
"She's my daughter too! Do you think she joined the ultra-rich Foster family because of you? It was all because of me!"
As those words sank in, she stood frozen.
Arthur's palm struck her face hard, the force pushing her mother to the floor as well.
"Mom!"
She reached out but was too late. Thankfully, Julian caught her mother from behind.
Right at that moment, the elevator doors opened.
Seeing Frederick, her mother pleaded desperately, "Frederick, the person framing Lydia has to be Cecilia. You can't let them get away with this."
She thought Frederick would naturally side with his wife and mother-in-law, but her mother was wrong.
The man's expression was indifferent as he stared at her. "The project manager was Lydia. It has nothing to do with anyone else."
Her mother's eyes lost their focus, staring at him in utter disbelief. "How can you say that? You saw how they bullied Lydia when you were kids. You used to come tell me, and you even helped me take care of her."
"You don't believe Lydia? You're not going to help her?"
The only response her mother received was his stone-cold silence.
A fiery pain blossomed across her cheek where five finger marks were rapidly forming. She slowly raised her hand to her aching face and looked back and forth between Frederick and Arthur. "From this day on, we are no longer family."
"Mom, let's go back to your room. I trust the police will prove my innocence." She and Julian helped her mother back to the ward.
Suddenly, her mother gripped her hand tightly. Looking back, she saw her mother's haggard face, her voice weak but resolute. "Lydia, divorce him."
Meeting her mother's tear-filled eyes, she nodded.
A few hours later, the police station called her in to drop the charges.
The police were incredibly efficient. After auditing the foundation's and the construction company's financial records, they discovered that Zachary Kemp had embezzled the funds and purchased the substandard steel pipes that caused the disaster. They were going to indict him.
Not only that, but Zachary had given up Cecilia. The Suttons were his suppliers for the shoddy materials.
