Everyone turned. Cassian stood at the doorway, all black from head to toe, his expression unreadable, eyes sharp and cold. The air around him dropped ten degrees.
Julian flinched.
Alaric’s face darkened. “Cassian, why are you meddling in this?”
Cassian didn’t even blink. “He doesn’t work at Draycroft. Inter-hospital transfers require approval, correct?”
Alaric’s face twitched.
This wasn’t about policy. He was just trying to play matchmaker.
Cassian added, voice flat, “Pretty bold to bend rules for personal reasons, Dr. Sable.”
Alaric looked ready to combust. “What are you implying, you punk-wait a minute…”
Realization dawned. “Don’t tell me-you’re interested in her too?”
“Personnel stays as planned,” Seraphina interrupted, eyes on the patient chart. “Let’s prep for surgery.”
Cassian’s lips curved slightly.
Julian looked offended but didn’t argue. “Whatever. I don’t need to be anyone’s assistant anyway.” He turned on his heel and left.
“Hey-get back here!” Alaric jogged after him.
“Grandpa, I’ve got work to do!”
“You call that work? Does it involve getting a wife?” Alaric smacked his grandson’s shoulder with his clipboard. “You let an opportunity like this slip and you’ll regret it for life!”
“Could you not hit me in public-”
“You better stop running or I’ll hit you harder!”
Back in the OR, the surgery began. In the waiting area, the atmosphere was tense. During a lull, Ashley approached Cassian, nervous.
“Mr. Drayven, I-I really appreciate what you’ve done for the kid. Coming all this way means a lot.”
Cassian didn’t turn. He kept his eyes on the surgery room window.
“I had my own reasons.”
Ashley wasn’t blind. Cassian looked at Seraphina like she was the only thing in focus. His eyes were soft in a way she’d never seen before.

It wasn’t hard to guess. She gave him a respectful nod and stepped aside.

Cassian turned to Victor. “Make sure everything post-op is handled. I want updates every hour. Do whatever it takes.”
Victor nodded and left.
Meanwhile, inside the OR, the surgery was halfway through. Seraphina had just removed the ECMO, but the patient’s heart rate plummeted immediately.
Without hesitation, she grabbed the defibrillator and delivered the first shock-nothing.
She tried again. This time, there was a flicker. The heart rate began to climb, and a wave of relief swept through the room as everyone finally exhaled.
Now came the final stage: closing the incision.
The atmosphere turned still: no one dared to speak or even breathe too loudly.
Seraphina stayed laser-focused, her hands steady, every movement calm and precise.
Four straight hours of high-stress suturing.
By the end, even the nurses were drenched in sweat.
Thirty minutes later, the OR doors opened. Ashley rushed forward.
An assistant met her halfway. “Surgery was a success. The kid’s stable.”
