Cassian had just opened his mouth when Seraphina’s phone rang. She lifted a hand in apology and answered.

“Asha, yeah, got it. We’ll talk when I see you.”

“I’ve got something to handle first.”

Cassian watched her from the side while she was on the call. Her features were soft, her expression calm. the kind of quiet presence that didn’t try to draw attention but somehow did anyway. It settled into him without warning.

The moment she hung up, he spoke, “I’ll drive you.”

Seraphina paused. She clearly hadn’t processed that yet.

Before she could respond, he had already taken her hand and guided her outside. A Bentley was parked right by the hospital entrance. He opened the passenger door.

“Get in and rest,” he said, his voice low and steady. “I’ll grab you something to eat. You need it.”

“Wait.” Seraphina frowned, irritation flashing in her eyes. “Your wife and kid are still in the hospital. Shouldn’t you be with them instead of buying food for me?”

Cassian smiled slightly, unbothered. “They’re not my family.”

She blinked. “Then earlier you-”

“I had an agenda,” he said, leaning in and cutting her off. “You really didn’t catch that?”

He was suddenly close. His collar was loose, his presence deliberate. A clean, understated scent lingered between them, distracting enough to throw her off balance.

His eyes stayed on hers, dark and focused. The kind of look that made it hard to breathe if you stared too long.

She took a moment, still trying to catch up. “So… what are you saying?”

“I’m saying I like you,” Cassian said plainly. “And I want to ask you out. Are you okay with that, Seraphina?”

She froze. A beat passed before heat crept into her face.

Then she said, “How old are you? Because I’m not dating an older guy.”

Older guy? Since when does twenty-eight count as that?

Had he really skipped the gym long enough to give off that impression?

He took a slow breath. “I’ll get you something to eat.”

He walked off, clearly annoyed, and came back quickly, like he didn’t trust her not to disappear.

In his hand was a neatly wrapped box.

She opened it. Inside were dark chocolate, avocados, mixed nuts, and other clean, high-quality/snacks.

Honestly, not a bad call.

“Just snacks,” Cassian said. “Don’t eat too much of this. If you’re actually hungry, I’ll take you out for a proper meal.” He added it quickly, clearly not wanting her to think he was cheap or small-minded.

Money was not an issue for him.

From a health standpoint, though, snacks really should be limited.

“I am a little hungry,” Seraphina said honestly. “But I already made plans with a friend.”

Cassian felt a brief dip of disappointment. What she really meant was clear, she had no intention of eating with him.

He didn’t let it show. He started the car.

About ten minutes later, the car came to a smooth stop in front of a café.

“I’ll help you,” Cassian said, leaning over. The familiar clean scent filled the space again.

She turned her head and studied his features.

At the same time, Cassian unbuckled his seatbelt and looked up at her, His eyes were focused, a sharp spark of intent in them. “Think about what I asked earlier. When you’ve decided, tell me.”

“Seraphina,” Cassian called out from the driver’s seat as he watched her walk away.

She didn’t turn back.

That really stung.

Did she seriously not believe him? Seraphina paused, curiosity getting the better of her, and turned around.

She saw Cassian tilting his head slightly, watching her through the open window. “I’ve never liked anyone before,” he said, his tone solemn.

Seraphina froze.

“You’re the first.”

She stared at him.

“I swear,” he added. “I’m not lying.”
