Tch. Like he wasn’t afraid of messing himself up sooner or later.

At the same time, in the Hawthorne estate study, Josh lay stretched out on the couch with a book resting over his face.

Out of nowhere, he sneezed.

He rubbed his nose and frowned to himself. Who’s the heartless idiot dragging me now?

Seraphina stopped wasting words. She picked up her things, opened the car door, got out, and flagged down a cab.

The taxi pulled away.

Isaac stood there, watching the taillights grow smaller and smaller.

After a moment, he stepped out of the car, turned toward the direction she had left, and bowed deeply.

After moving from Mingdale to Valedawn, they arrived full of ambition, convinced they could afford a place downtown. Reality hit fast. Their savings did not even come close. What they could actually afford was something far from the city, barely livable by comparison.

In the living room, Leonard sat on the couch, dialing a number for the third time. The phone rang three times and was cut off again.

Miranda snapped. “That girl is doing it on purpose. Ignoring your calls and acting all high and mighty. If it weren’t for Lyanna, who would bother calling her?”

Calling her was risky in itself. What if that girl got greedy and decided she wanted the Vale family’s wealth?

What if she latched on and refused to let go?

Leonard tried again. The call was rejected.

His expression darkened. Seraphina’s presence kept him on edge, like something that could go wrong at

any moment.

“What if we hire a tutor for Lyanna?” Leonard suddenly said, an idea flashing through his mind.

Miranda froze, then her eyes lit up. “Right. She can copy Spring Banquet in Autumn’s Twilight every day Over and over, until she can recreate it perfectly.”

By then, even if Seraphina told the truth, so what? As long as Lyanna could produce the same painting.

No proof, no credibility. Everyone would assume Seraphina was jealous of her sister’s engagement and stirring trouble on purpose.

No one would believe her.

The more Miranda thought about it, the happier she became. She clapped her hands. “Brilliant. Absolutely

brilliant.”

“Mom, what are you so happy about?”

Lyanna’s cheerful voice came from the doorway.

The couple turned to see Lyanna walking in hand in hand with Damian, looking like a newlywed pair.

“Damian’s here,” Miranda said quickly, getting to her feet. “Leonard, go grab some fruit.”

“Please don’t trouble yourselves,” Damian said politely.

They always said mothers in law found sons in law more likable the longer they looked.

Miranda was beyond satisfied with Damian. Handsome, prestigious background, impeccable on paper.

A catch like this was rare. And it had fallen right into their laps.

“Damian, have some watermelon,” Miranda said, smiling so wide her face hurt.

Leonard placed the fruit platter closer to him. “Try the grapes. Just bought them today.”

Their words and actions carried more than a hint of eagerness to please.
