Chapter 57 Double Standards

Gregory thought his daughter was upset.

Kids hated interest classes and skill training, didn’t they?

“Exactly. No competitions, no lessons,” Gregory said, raising both hands in agreement. “Seraphina, you don’t have to learn anything. Go to college if you want. If you don’t feel like it, don’t go.”

Seraphina fell silent. That open-minded?

“And you don’t need to look for a job either,” Gregory went on. “Work is exhausting. You run into heartless bosses and end up working overtime every day.”

Celestine nodded along. “That’s right. You don’t need to earn money. We will take care of you.”

Seraphina felt a headache coming on. No wonder they were married. Their values lined up perfectly.

Viola was furious.

Ever since she was a child, from the moment she started school, Gregory and Celestine had drilled self- reliance into her, pushing her to stand on her own and stay ahead.

But when it came to Seraphina, suddenly everything changed.

No degree. No job. No skills. Is she just supposed to float through life doing nothing? Yeah, real fair.

“Sweetheart, don’t worry about money,” Celestine said. “Even after we’re gone, you’ll still be fine. You have Cassian.”

“Exactly,” Gregory added, clearly pleased with the idea. “Cassian can/support you for the rest of your life.”

He picked up his phone, completely serious. “I’ll call him now and make it clear.”

It was impossible to have a peaceful meal.

Seraphina sighed and rubbed her forehead.

A moment later, Gregory came back smiling and set his phone on the table. “Relax. He agreed.”

Viola felt even worse.

She had always planned on marrying Cassian.

Now Gregory and Celestine worked themselves to exhaustion, only to support Seraphina for life?

Why should that be?

She forced her anger down and smiled gently. “Seraphina, people say talent doesn’t matter for women, but this is a new era. College is still important.

“You grew up in a smaller place and haven’t seen a real comprehensive university. Valedawn University is actually very fun. You might discover new interests, want to learn something, and gain real skills. If you ever want to work later, you’d have options.”

Seraphina lifted her gaze, her crescent-shaped eyes studying Viola with faint amusement.

It sounded as if she were being described as completely useless.

Fine. One day, these words would come back to haunt her.

Seraphina curved her lips, her voice clear. “Alright. I do want to go to college.”

“Then I’ll arrange your transfer,” Gregory said immediately. “Valedawn University is close to home, so your mom and I can see you often.”

“But,” Seraphina said, setting her utensils aside and standing up, “I want to attend as an ordinary student. don’t want complicated connections.”

College should be simple and clean. Ordinary was better.

Gregory agreed without hesitation.

“I’m done eating,” Seraphina said, then left the dining room and went upstairs.

Celestine noticed she had barely eaten and frowned. “Did the food not suit your taste? I’ll have it redone.”

“No.”

“How about dessert later? I’ll have it sent to your room?”
