Chapter 66 Walls and Smoke
She stayed steady, as if there were an invisible wall holding everything at bay.
In the end, the two of them walked into a packed casual dining spot.
While they waited in line, she took out her phone and saw a WhatsApp message from Asha.
Asha asked, “Can the Lunaria Pill be traded now?”
She typed back, “Yes. Two pills.”

Asha fired back, “Two? You actually made two? No wonder you kept raising the price at the auction.” By the math alone, it was a guaranteed win, and Asha was practically grinning from ear to ear.
She replied flatly, “I thought we weren’t friends anymore?”
Asha went silent.
After a brief pause, Asha dodged shamelessly, “Did I ever say that? I definitely didn’t say that. Must’ve been someone else.”
Seraphina didn’t respond.
Asha added, “So should I start talking to the buyer?”
Seraphina didn’t type. She sent an OK emoji.
Soon, it was their turn. They were led into a private booth.
The table filled quickly as the dishes arrived, steam rising and rich aromas spreading through the booth, instantly stirring their appetite.
They reached for their food almost at the same time, falling into an easy rhythm as they ate.
Partway through the meal, she couldn’t help herself and posted a photo to her feed, just one picture with a short caption. “Highly recommend. So good.”
As more dishes were cleared and replaced, the air stayed warm and hazy. They ate without holding back, heat lingering on their skin, a light sheen of sweat forming at the bridge of their noses.
Afterward, Seraphina leaned back, holding a glass of juice, her gaze unfocused, quiet and content.
Through the hazy steam, the woman across from him looked almost unreal. The sight stirred something unfamiliar, spreading slowly from his chest through the rest of him.
“Seraphina,” he called softly.
Hm?” She snapped back to attention.
“It’s time to go.”

“Okay.”
They walked out onto the trendy street and were just about to get into the car. Tires screeched.
A black sports car slammed to a stop beside her, and the rear door flew open.
“Well, Seraphina,” Alaric said loudly, “I finally tracked you down.”
Clearly, he’d followed the location from her social post.
Alaric jumped out of the car, visibly tense, sweat faintly dotting his forehead. “This is urgent. Come with me. Now.”
He reached for her arm, ready to pull her into the car.
“What’s going on?” Cassian asked, stepping in and blocking him.
“No time to explain,” Alaric waved impatiently. “This is life or death. Move, move.”
It didn’t look like an exaggeration.
Seraphina glanced at Cassian. “I’ll go.”
“Okay,” he said.
Across the street, Adrian was out shopping with his mother when he happened to look up.
He saw a man well past middle age grabbing a young woman and pulling her toward a car.
The girl was the transfer student he’d seen earlier that day at Valedawn University. Seraphina.
He frowned in disgust. Just like Sabrina said. Poor character, bad judgment. Exactly the kind of person who belonged in a bottom-tier international program.
“Adrian,” His mom, Edith noticed the change in his expression. “What is it?”
“Nothing,” he said, pulling his gaze back. “I’ll get the car. Wait here.”
Edith nodded, then followed his line of sight. Her eyes froze.
That man was Alaric, the director of Draycroft Hospital.
The matriarch at home was critically ill. The family had exhausted every connection trying to get Alaric to operate, and he’d never once responded.
Edith frowned slightly. Who was the girl with him?
Alaric only had one grandson. Everyone knew that.
Was the girl an illegitimate child?
