Somewhere along the way, too many years and too many compromises had buried that original purpose
There was no turning back now. Franklin had already crossed the line.
“Ms. Vale,” he said, forcing composure, “even if your skills are exceptional, what if something goes wrong? Who takes responsibility?”
In the end, it would all land on him. Why should he be the one left holding the bag?
Put any of them in his position. They’d hesitate too.
He had a family. A life. Who could afford that kind of risk?
Seraphina didn’t flinch. “If anything happens,” she said, “I take full responsibility.”
“You?” Franklin laughed.
Fine, she was skilled. He’d grant that.
But responsibility? With what? Her savings even hit five figures yet?
This was ridiculous. He stopped arguing and called security to have her removed.
The room sank into oppressive silence.
They waited. And waited. No security arrived. Ten minutes passed.
Franklin’s patience snapped. He called the head of security himself. The line rang. No answer. Unease crept up his spine.
Rubbing his temples, Franklin gestured sharply. “Charles. Go see what they’re doing.”
“Yes, Director.”
Charles nodded. As he passed Seraphina, he stopped and let out a deliberate snort before heading for the door.
He reached for the handle. The door slammed open.
Charles barely had time to react before it struck his face. He stumbled back, clutching his nose.
He opened his mouth to curse. A voice cut through the room. Cold. Flat. Commanding.
“Dr. Bishop,” the voice said, “are you looking for them?”

Behind him, the security team was pinned against the wall, unable to move.
It was Cassian.
No one else in Valedawn carried that kind of pressure.
He walked straight to Seraphina, lowered his head slightly, and met her eyes with a faint smile.
“Finally,” he said softly, “a chance to show off in front of you.”
Seraphina was speechless. He rested a hand on her head, drew her to his side, shielding her completely
Then he looked up The warmth vanished. His expression turned lethal, voice dropping into something dangerous.
I want to see who dares touch her
