Chapter 36
If Steve had spared me even a single glance back at the construction site, he wouldn’t be asking a question like this now.
Just then, Isabel emerged from behind the blue curtain. “Steve, has the doctor come yet? My heart is racing so fast. I feel so anxious.”
Steve looked at her, then at me. “Let the doctor see Isabel first. She has a heart condition. This is life-threatening.”
But Dr. Palmer was surprisingly firm. Even after receiving a call from the hospital director, he ended the call straight away.
Then, he turned to Steve and said, “I’ll stake my medical career on this-Ms. Stone has no problems whatsoever. Her myocarditis was something she had as a child, and it was cured long ago. There is no possibility of recurrence. If she’s feeling anxious, you can just comfort her.”
Then he turned to me. “This lady in the wheelchair, on the other hand, would need to amputate her toe if she doesn’t undergo surgery immediately. She’ll be disabled!”
After that, Steve didn’t say another word. He watched as the nurses hurriedly wheeled me toward the operating room.
On the way, I called Juliet. It was my first surgery ever, and I was scared.
I also took leave from work.
When I was wheeled into the operating room, I didn’t expect Steve to follow inside.
I said to him coldly, “I’ve called Juliet. I don’t need you here. Go back and stay with Isabel.”
Steve replied flatly, “The doctor needs a family member to sign. Your colleague has already left.”
In other words, he was the only one who could sign for me now.
And the kind Luca, who had helped me, was dismissed by him as merely my colleague.
At that moment, the nurse came over with the surgical consent form.
Steve was about to take the pen, but I snatched it away and said to the nurse, “He’s not my family.”
With that, I signed my own name on the consent form.

Steve turned to the nurse and asked, “How skilled was that doctor just now? Go get the best specialist. Make sure there are no lasting complications.”
“I want that doctor,” I said firmly.
If it hadn’t been for Dr. Palmer’s principles, if it were someone more timid and accommodating, I might have had to lose my foot.
Hence, I trusted him and was willing to have him be my surgeon.
Dr. Palmer shot him an annoyed look. “Sir, do you have a grudge against your wife? If you keep delaying like this, by the time the specialist arrives, her foot will already be crippled!”
I said to Dr. Palmer, “You don’t need to listen to him. I signed the consent myself. I’ll decide my own surgery.”
In the end, because of my insistence, it was Dr. Palmer who operated.

Before I was wheeled into the operating room for anesthesia, the nurse whispered to me, Don’t worry. Dr. Palmer is the youngest professor in the entire hospital. He normally doesn’t work in the ER. He was only assigned here recently because it’s been so busy. You’re absolutely in good hands. You lucked out!”
I didn’t know how long the surgery lasted.
When I woke up from the anesthesia, it was already dark.
Juliet was sitting on the couch nearby, her face full of worry. When she heard me stir, she rushed over immediately. “You’re awake? How do you feel? I’ll go get the doctor right now!”
“Juliet,” I called out.
At a glance, I noticed the large bruise on her forehead. I asked with a hoarse voice, “What happened to your forehead?”
Juliet’s expression flickered unnaturally, and she brushed it off. “I bumped it accidentally. It’s
nothing.”
She then called the doctor over to give me a thorough checkup.
Only after confirming that the surgery had been successful and that I was out of danger did she feed me some oatmeal.
