From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 55

Steve leaned half-propped against the side of my bed as he felt my forehead. "Feeling any better now?"

I looked at him, fighting back the sting in my eyes.

This face matched the stranger's from the last part of my dream. He was no longer the Steve I once knew.

Maybe noticing the tears threatening to fall, Steve softened his voice. "I know you've suffered a lot this time. I'll tell Dorothy that you saved her."

I curled my lip in disdain and asked, "Does that even matter?"

His deep eyes fixed on me as he replied slowly, "It does."

I didn't see why.

I risked my life, teetering on death multiple times, to give Dorothy blood just for her to say "thank you"?

But I had overestimated Steve and Isabel's daughter.

It turned out that the blood I gave these past few days didn't even deserve a single "thank you" from her.

When Isabel learned that I'd woken up, she came to my ward with Dorothy.

The moment Steve heard Dorothy was coming, he immediately let go of me, got out of bed, and straightened his clothes. He made it look like we were having some secret affair that had to be hidden.

Isabel brought Dorothy to me and acted all sweet and thoughtful in front of Steve. "Steve, I brought Dorothy to thank Ms. Yaxley. She's Dorothy's lifesaver, after all."

Steve looked quite pleased with how Isabel was handling this. With a nod, he waited for Dorothy to say her thanks.

But the young girl looked at me like I was the enemy. "Why should I thank her? When I was sick, Mommy took care of me, read me stories, and helped me sleep. What does this bad woman have to do with anything? I don't want to thank her!"

"Dorothy, what did I tell you?"

Isabel looked nervous as she 'educated' her daughter. "I told you we should be grateful and repay kindness."

Dorothy glared at me and snapped, "She didn't do anything for me. You and Daddy are the ones who helped me! I hate needles. If she hadn't given me blood, I wouldn't have to get shots!"

Isabel looked apologetic as she said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Yaxley. Dorothy is too young to understand, but you did save her. I'll do whatever you want me to do. Even if it means being your maid."
