Chapter 114

Four years later.
“Griffon! Slow down, you’re going to fall!” I yell over at Griffon as he races over to the play set. Griffon is my little daredevil. Doesn’t matter the challenge, he’ll face it. Makes for a very nervous mother, aunt and uncle. Nick handles it better than me though.
Heather is a gentle angel. She’s always sweet, caring and so full of heart. She can sense when someone’s in a bad mood and makes all the attempts to brighten your mood. They both collide perfectly, Griffon always the protector and Heather always the savior.
I watch as they play in the park, they’re playing a save the princess game where Nick’s the dragon. It’s fun to watch them be kids. Honestly, they get to be kids more often than I would have thought. We usually stay somewhere for about a year before having to move on. It doesn’t give them much time to make friends, but they seem happy in our little bubble. I’ve explained as much as I could to them, but there’s still more they need to know. It’s all to keep everyone safe, and they know that. They are so smart for their age.
It’s rare that Nick and I can be at the park together. We work in shifts, I work nights, Nick works mornings and Hazel works afternoons. We’re making things work pretty well with three incomes, and this way someone’s always home to be with the kids. Nick and I just happened to both be off today.
He chases Griffon around the park pretending to blow fire at him. Hazel and Nick have really both been amazing, helping me anytime I need them. Practically taking on the role of extra parents to them. They say they wouldn’t have it any other way. They love them just as much as I do. “Mommy! Come help me slay the dragon!” Griffon yells, I get up and make my way over to take Nick down.
The next day, I get ready for work and watch as Hazel walks through the door. She’s working at the same bar I work at, just different hours. “It was already crazy today, good luck.” She tells me as she walks down the hall and to her room. Great! I actually love busy nights. Work goes by faster and I get more tips.
When I head inside, she was not lying, the bar is bustling. The head waitress Barb puts me to work the second she sees me. “Get your apron, and you have section four!” I smile and just do what I’m told.
“What can I get for you guys?” I ask II walk up to a table of four men. “What are your specials, sweetheart.” I flinch still not liking to be called sweetheart but tell them the specials. I take their orders and make my way to the bar to make them.
The night goes on, but it’s going fast like I like it to. I hate the idea of not being home with my babies. For something to happen while I’m not there, it makes me cringe just thinking about it. I know Hazel and Nick would do anything to protect them, but that only calms my soul slightly.
I’m finally able to go home around three and walk in and see Nick watching tv in the living room. “Why are you still up?” I ask taking off my shoes and going to go sit down next to him. “Couldn’t sleep.” He answers and I lay my head down on his shoulder. We sit like that for awhile, until we hear a scream coming from the kid’s room.
My mind is instantly racing, and I’m running like hell to their room. I swing open the door only to find my father, fighting Griffon off his back. Griffon has his hands on my fathers’ face and looks like he’s poking his eyes. I race over and grab Griffon off his back and throw him on the bed with Heather. I get in front of them trying to block his path to them. There’s no where to go, not trying to haul the kids out with me.
My father finally regains his composure and looks directly at me, with his creepy smile. I can’t breath. What the
