Chapter 139

My cheeks are bright red as I sit up and face Heather. “You guys were kissing! Are you getting back together?” Heather exclaims loudly, I glance up at Liam and turn back to our daughter. “No sweetie, we got caught up in a moment, but your daddy and I have a lot to talk about. Let’s go downstairs and get something to eat.” I don’t look back at Liam, not wanting to know how he feels about what I said. I’m not sure it’s even true, I just don’t want to get my baby’s hopes up. They’ve been through enough with more to come, without adding this to the mix.

I grab onto Heather’s hand and start leading her down the stairs, with Liam close behind. When we get downstairs Heather lets go of my hand and starts racing to the kitchen. “Griff! Griff! Mommy and Daddy were kissing!” She shouts to him and the entire room goes quiet staring between me and Liam. I can feel the heat rising in my cheeks. Goddess, if it wasn’t bad enough to have Heather see us kissing now everybody knows. I mentally facepalm my forehead then shout at Heather. “Heather!” I don’t really know what to say, because it’s not like she’s lying and we also didn’t tell her not to say anything, but Goddess, I’m so embarrassed right now. Not because I was caught kissing Liam, but because I was caught by my child and she felt the need to announce it to everybody.

Griffon looks up at me with pleading eyes, “Mommy? Does that mean…” He doesn’t finish his question looking at me with pleading eyes. I can’t think of anything to say. Everybody in the room is watching me, waiting to see what’s going on. I can’t answer, I don’t know.

Thankfully, Liam finally intercedes, walking over and throwing Griffon over his shoulder and Griffon starts laughing. “Mommy and I are just talking about some stuff. If anything happens you and Heather will be the first to know.” He tells him, once he’s settled in on Liam’s side he stops laughing and looks him straight in the eyes. “You promise?” Griffon asks Liam and Liam smiles brightly. “I promise.” Liam answers him and I sigh a breath of relief. Liam walks Griffon over to Walker and throws him in Walker’s waiting arms. Walker grabs him and starts throwing him in the air, and Heather runs over wanting to be thrown too.

I can finally take a second to breathe and I turn seeing Hazel. I instantly walk over to her pulling her into a big hug. When I pull back I look at Hazel accusingly, “Did you know about Nick?” I whisper to her looking right into her eyes for any sign of deception. She grimaces, looking over my shoulder at Nick. I look back with her and see Nick lower his head, not willing to look at me. When her face turns back her lips are tight and she gives me a small nod.

I drop my arms instantly, not sure how I feel about both of the people I’ve trusted for the last six years lying to me the whole time. I just look at her for a long time. I can feel the whole room watching me, waiting to see my reaction, but I don’t do anything but stare. Hazel closes her eyes taking a deep breath, then placing her hands on my shoulders. “Amy, I’m so sorry we withheld that truth from you, but it was never an option to separate from Nick.” I continue to just stare at her.

I know she knows things, feels things that I can’t. That doesn’t mean they had to lie to me about it all these years. I’m suddenly overwhelmed by a very familiar scent and an arm wrapping around my waist. “Let’s all just sit down, there’s a lot to talk about.” Liam says, gently pulling me away, heading for the couch.

My eyes finally leave Hazel’s and I look around the room for Griffon and Heather. Liam notices, “Mom and dad took them outside to play.” He whispers in my ear after we sit down on the couch. Dallas takes the spot next to me, grabbing my hand, Nick sits on the ground next to him, Hazel sits in the armchair to Liam’s side, Mia and Walker sit on the ground in front of the coffee table.

I stare at Mia, the only person I have always trusted. The only person who has never lied to me. The only person.
