Chapter 40

“Right.” Is all Liam says, before standing up. He starts putting on his shoes and walking towards the door. “I’m going to go grab some work and I’ll come back over.” He tells me, I look over at my desk again. “You don’t have to come back over.” I say and he looks down, “I still want to make sure you’re protected. Even if you plan on leaving us a year early.” He says and doesn’t wait for my reply and walks out.

At least he isn’t trying to make me stay. I guess I can give him points for that. But it still hurts, watching them be sad about me leaving. Two months ago, my only reservation on leaving was my mom. Mia’s always supported me and understood, she always said as long as I stayed in contact with her, she’d survive. Now, that they are apart of my life, I have to make them understand as well.

He comes back in less then five minutes and sits down quietly on my bed. He spreads out his books and schoolwork and gets to work. About an hour of silence goes by and I can’t take it anymore. I turn around quickly and it gets his attention. “Look, you of all people should understand why I want to leave. You’ve seen some of the things done to me. It isn’t safe to be a human in a wolf pack. Until recently, the only kindness I remember happened before we all turned twelve. That’s six years. Six years of rude looks, getting thrown into lockers, no one speaking to me, random hurtful rumors, weekly beatings, and losing all the friends I had before and watching them move on with their lives like I never mattered to them. Damn Liam, I can’t even to go to school right now, because of a threat to my life. I can’t stay, I just… Can’t.” I finish quietly and look up into his eyes. He looks ashamed. Not saying he shouldn’t be, but that’s not the reason I said what I said. I just need him to

understand.

He seems speechless, as he just stares into my eyes sadly. “Look, I’m not trying to be hurtful. I just want you to see it from my perspective. I don’t belong here. Can we just move on and pretend I’m not leaving? I promise not to bring up leaving again.” I say, hoping he’ll agree. He looks conflicted, but nods in agreement. “Yeah, we can do that.” He answers.

I smile and turn back around towards my desk. This will be good. We’ll have a good rest of the year and end things on a good note. I hear the door creep open, and I turn quickly towards it. My mom walks in and takes in the scene. She looks at Liam and starts chuckling, “So, you skip school to do homework?” She sounds amazed. He smiles, “Miss goodie good over there wanted to work on schoolwork and wouldn’t let me convince her otherwise.” He looks at me accusingly. My mom laughs, “Sounds about right.” She walks over to me and kisses the top of my head, “Alright well, I’m headed out to run some errands. Be good.” She says and looks directly at Liam. He throws his hands up in surrender as she leaves the room headed to work. “Love you, mom!” I yell and she yells it back at me. She must have been too distracted by Liam to remember to say it. I look over at Liam, yeah can’t say I blame her. I let out a small chuckle as I’m checking out Liam, and he looks over at me.

Like he can read my thoughts a smirk forms on his face as mine turn’s beet red. I quickly look back at my desk and pretend to keep working on my homework. I can’t focus at all anymore though. I hear him get off the bed and his feet make their way over to me. He stands next to me and holds out his hand. I give him a look of confusion. “Come on, I can’t focus on anything. Let’s get some fresh air.” He pleads, I look outside, ugh it even looks cold outside, but fresh air does sound nice. I take his hand and let him pull me out of my chair.

We get outside with me completely bundled and I’m still cold. We start taking a walk, and he leads me over past his house to the creek. I haven’t been here in six years, but it still looks the same. We go and sit on an old bench that I’m not sure can hold both of us anymore.
