Chapter 71

We get to the hospital and park quickly. The lady at the desk takes pity on us and tells us she’s in surgery, but we can’t see her yet. We sit in the waiting room, eventually being joined by my parents and Mia’s. Everything feels like a dream, please let this be a dream. I’d rather wake up to her leaving than this.
My mom and dad sit on either side of me. Mom holds my hand and does her best at a smile, but it doesn’t reach her eyes, and her eyes are red and puffy from crying. My dad pats my shoulder and holds his hand there trying to give me some strength, which I do think it helps because I finally am able to speak. “Who did this, dad?” I look up at him, pleading with my eyes for him to tell me. He glances over at my mom and looks down sadly, “We don’t know. They didn’t leave a trace, not even a scent.” He answers, but I can tell there’s more to it by the way he keeps glancing over at my mom. “Tell me, what you know.” I say angrily, and he looks down. “We’ll talk about this at home.” He says in finality, making sure I know we’re not talking about this here. I nod, letting it go
for now.
Six hours we wait for news, six hours! I can barely concentrate I’m so worried. But my mom keeps telling me no news is good news right now. So, that’s what I’m holding onto. Finally, we see a doctor come out of the double doors and walk over to us. We all instantly stand and surround him, “Are any of you family?” He asks, and my mom instantly steps up, “Yes, I’m her mother.” He nods at her knowing it’s not true. The Luna has a son no daughters. But Amy has no family now, we’re all she has, he still continues, “Well, Amy had two bullet holes in her back, and she lost a lot of blood. We got the bullets out and replaced her blood, but one of the bullets got close to her heart. We had to do extensive surgery to mend the arteries and blood vessels around her heart. She’s stable for now, and in the icu. We’ll let you know when you can come visit her.” He says shaking my dad’s hand and walking away.
She’s stable for now? Goddess, I wish she was a wolf right now, so she could heal. We all just stand there in a semi-circle processing the news. I can’t hold it in anymore. “Fuck!” I shout and punch the nearest wall and walk out of the hospital. I can feel all of their eyes on me, but I don’t care. I need to get out of here for a minute. The news wasn’t the worst news we could have gotten, but it wasn’t the best either. Once I get outside, I notice the guys have followed me out. I look around trying to figure out where to go, but I can’t go anywhere. I can’t be far away from her, not now.
Everybody looks grim as we all just stare at each other. I squat down covering my face with my hands. Dallas squats beside me putting his hand on my shoulder, I look over at him. “She can’t die.” I whisper so low I can barely hear it. “She won’t. She’s strong. She’ll pull through.” He says, starting to believe what he’s saying. I can see it in his eyes, he still has hope. I could use some of that right now.
