I grabbed Kade’s hand before he could pull it back. His knuckles were split and bloody, the skin raw- though the wolf spirit’s healing was already stitching it back together.
“Let’s get to the hospital first,” I said, keeping my voice steady. As we moved, I shot Briar a quick text, asking for an update.
Zane kept calling during the ride, filling us in.
“Andrew was taken by Mary against his will. He managed to slip away in the chaos after the attack. Mary. she ran off while they were loading Edith into the ambulance.”
“Find her.” Kade’s voice was ice. “I don’t care what it takes–turn over every stone.”
I could see the tension in his jaw, the vein pulsing near his temple. I reached over and gently pressed my palm to the back of his neck, rubbing slow circles.
“Your grandmother loves you more than anything,” I said softly. “She wouldn’t want to see you tearing yourself apart like this.”
For a long moment, Kade didn’t move. Then he leaned forward, resting his forehead against my shoulder. I felt some of the stiffness leave his body, just a little.
Briar was already waiting in the hospital hallway when we arrived.
His white coat carried the sharp, clean scent of antiseptic. “CT showed a mild brain hemorrhage. We’ve stabilized her, but Edith’s older–recovery will take time.”
Through the ICU window, I could see her. The woman who was always so full of life lay still in the bed, surrounded by tubes and monitors. She looked small. Fragile.
Lyra moved closer to the glass, her expression tightening. She didn’t need to say it–I could feel it too. Edith’s wolf spirit energy was faint, flickering. Even if she pulled through, her time was running short.
My stomach dropped. I looked over at Kade.
Grief and worry were etched into his face, his eyes shadowed. He swallowed hard, his voice rough when he finally spoke.
“When will she wake up?”
“By tomorrow at the latest,” Briar said, adjusting his glasses. He glanced at me, then back at Kade. “But before she lost consciousness… Edith kept calling for you. And for Nira.”
Something warth and aching bloomed in my chest. I laced my fingers through Kade’s and squeezed. “We’re not leaving her. We’ll stay right here.”
Late that night, the hospital room was quiet except for the steady beep of monitors.

Kade sat beside the bed, holding Edith’s wrinkled hand in both of his. I brought over a cup of water and carefully moistened her dry lips with a soft cloth.

“When I was ten,” Kade said quietly, not looking away from his grandmother, “before my awakened. I got hit with wolfsbane poisoning. Burned with fever for three days straight. She never left my side.”
I felt the slight tremor in his shoulders and rested my hand there, silent.
Then, Edith’s fingers twitched.
“Grandma.” Kade was on his feet in an instant.
Her eyes opened slowly, clouded at first. But the moment they landed on Kade, they cleared.
Her lips moved, soundless. Kade bent close.
“The ring…” Her voice was thin, barely a whisper. “Did you… give it to Nira?”
Kade’s eyes reddened. He nodded, drawing me closer to his side.
Edith’s gaze drifted to our joined hands, to the blue diamond resting on my finger. A slow, deep satisfaction settled over her face. A tear traced from the corner of her eye.
“Good…” She lifted her trembling hand with visible effort and pressed ours together beneath her palm. “Now… I can rest.”
She took a shallow breath, words coming in fragments. “You can rest too… The Elders… they won’t oppose Nira as your Luna anymore. Her talent… her heart… It won them over.“/
For the highest Elders to accept someone like me—a girl they once saw as having no wolf spirit–as future Luna… I didn’t need her to say it. I knew how hard Edith had fought behind the scenes to make this happen.
My throat tightened. I blinked hard, holding back tears.
Just then, noise erupted outside the door.
“I’m sorry, visiting hours are-“A nurse’s voice cut off abruptly.
The door eased open.
Andrew stood there, a woman beside him. He looked thinner, shadows under his eyes–nothing like the bright, easy–going guy I remembered from school.
