Andrew flinched, shoulders tensing. The woman beside him–Madison–stepped forward, holding out a bouquet toward Kade. “We… brought these for Edith.”
“Get out.” Kade’s voice was low, eerily calm.
From the hospital bed, Edith lifted a frail hand. “Kade…”

Nira’s POV:
I walked in carrying a medication tray and recognized Andrew immediately. He used to carry himself with this bright, easygoing energy–like someone who’d never known a cloudy day. Now he was slumped over, a sunflower withered by an early frost.
Kade’s jaw was locked tight. I gave his fingers a gentle squeeze, then took the flowers from Madison’s trembling hands.
“I’m… I’m so sorry… I never knew…” Madison stumbled over her words, face flushed with panic.
I stayed quiet, watching mother and son. If I pitied them, who was left to carry the weight of what Kade had been through?
Madison had helped Mary hide Andrew and raise him in the shadows, behind the Howell family’s back. That was her burden to bear.
Suddenly, Andrew dropped to his knees with a heavy thud against the linoleum.
He pressed his forehead to the cold floor, shoulders shaking violently. “I’m sorry… I swear, if I’d known
sooner…”
Kade turned his face away, tendons standing out along his neck.
“Get out,” he repeated, voice like ice. He pointed toward the door. “I don’t want a performance.”
Madison sank down beside her son, tears streaking her aged cheeks. “Edith, I wronged your family… all those years ago, if I hadn’t been so desperate for the money
| “Enough!” Edith tried to push herself up, agitated, and the heart monitor spiked into the danger zone.
I hit the call button, steadied Edith with one hand, and began emergency care with the other–movements quick, practiced.
Kade seized Andrew by the collar and hauled him into the hallway. He bared his fangs, a low growl rumbling in his throat. “If either of you shows up here again and upsets my grandmother, I’ll tear you apart myself”
Andrew paled. His lips moved, but no sound came out.

Madison tried to follow, to explain, but hospital security stepped in, blocking her path.

“Mr. Howell…” Andrew suddenly caught Kade’s sleeve, voice choked. “I just… I need you to know how sorry
I am…”
Kade shook him off, eyes sharp as broken glass. “Get lost.”
I hurried out just as Andrew stumbled back and slammed hard against the wall.
Gently, I took Kade’s arm. “Grandma’s stable. Briar’s with her.”
Down the hall, Madison had collapsed onto a bench, sobbing into her hands.
Andrew stood frozen, like a kid who’d been caught doing something unforgivable–hands hanging uselessly at his sides.
“Leave,” I said, my tone leaving no room. “And don’t come back. Not to the hospital, not to the Howells.”
Finally, Andrew helped his mother up, and they walked away, steps unsteady…
But he returned the next day.
And the day after. For three days straight, he appeared in the hospital lobby.
Security chased him off. Nurses told him he couldn’t stay. He’d just retreat to a corner chair, refusing food or water, eyes fixed on the elevator doors with this helpless, hopeful stare.
On the third night, I went down for coffee and found him curled in that same chair, asleep, still clutching a small thermos against his chest.
“He’s running a fever,” the night nurse murmured to me. “But he won’t go to the ER.”
As I approached, Andrew startled awake and stood up too fast. “How is she?” His voice was scraped raw,
“Fever reducer.” I held out pills and a paper cup of water. “Don’t get the patients sick.”
