The hospital room door swung open, and Kade stepped out into the hallway. He wore a plain white shirt with the sleeves casually rolled up to his elbows, his expression unreadable, calm as still water,
Mary stood waiting, her makeup smeared and eyes wild with anger. “Where is Andrew?” she demanded, her voice trembling with rage. “What have you done with him?”
Kade signaled for the nearby nurse–who’d been staring, frozen–to leave. Then he replied/evenly, “I don’t know.”
“You’re lying!” Mary hurled her purse to the floor, baring her teeth in a snarl. “You’ve always been jealous. ever since you were a boy. You couldn’t stand that I loved Andrew more, so you took him from me, didn’t you?”
His
“Are you finished?” Kade cut in, his tone cool and detached. His gaze was steady, almost unnervingly calm. “If you’re done, you can go.”
Mary blinked, caught off guard by his response. For a second she just stared, then surged forward and grabbed fistfuls of his collar. “Why are you so cold? Did you hurt him? Tell me!”
Gently but firmly, Kade pried her hands away. “If you want to find your son, go look for him yourself.”
He smoothed his wrinkled shirt, his voice dropping low. “Starting today, you and I are no longer mother and son. Go wherever you want. No one will lock you away anymore.”
Mary stood rigid, her crimson nails digging half–moons into her own palms.
“Go find Andrew. Lose yourself all over again, if that’s what you want.” Kade’s eyes sharpened like blades. “But if you ever raise a hand toward Grandma again, or cause any harm to the Howell family…”
He took a step forward, his tall frame casting her in shadow, an Alpha’s dominance rolling off him in waves. “Then don’t blame me for what comes next.”
Without another word, he turned to leave.
Mary lurched after him, but Natalie moved smoothly into her path. In sleek heels, Natalie blocked the way, her beautifully maintained face wearing a polite yet dangerous smile. “That’s far enough, Mary.”
Mary’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you? This is none of your business.”
“Oh, it’s very much my business.” Natalie took her time removing her diamond earrings, tucking them into her handbag. Then her wolf eyes flashed, and she seized Mary by the collar. “Kade is my daughter’s destined mate. So tell me–does that make it my business or not?”
Mary stumbled backward, startled by the sudden aggression. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“What am I doing?” Natalie’s laugh was icy. She tightened her grip. “Let me ask you something. You betrayed Kade’s father all those years ago. Now you’re making a scene over your… illegitimate son. Do you even deserve to call yourself a mother?”

Everyone in the hallway–nurses, patients, orderlies–froze. No one expected this elegant, polished woman to snap with such force, her presence radiating a dominance that rivaled any high–ranking Alpha.
Mary tried to shove her off but couldn’t match her strength. Bluffing, she spat, “If you know I’m Kade’s mother, you’ll let go right now. Otherwise, one word from me and your precious Nira will never marry into the Howell family.”
Natalie gave a dismissive chuckle, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear with deliberate calm. “Mary, do you really think this is still twenty years ago?”
She leaned in closer, her piercing gaze locking onto Mary’s. “The Howell family belongs to Kade now. He’s about to be crowned Alpha King. You hold no real power here—what gives you the right to give orders?”
Mary’s face twisted. “I am his mother!”
“Mother?” Natalie’s voice rose sharply, drawing every pair of eyes in the corridor.
