Kade and I stood at the end of the hallway, silently taking in the scene, a swirl of emotions between us
Beside me, I noticed Kade’s Adam’s apple move slightly. His feelings had to be even more tangled than
mine.
After all, his own mother had never understood or cared for him the way someone outside their family just had.
My chest tightened for him, and without thinking, I reached for his hand.
When my fingers wrapped around his, I realized–this man who always seemed so unshakable had palms that were slightly damp.
Studying his expression, I kept my voice soft. “Was my mom… too hard on her?”
But Kade shook his head and squeezed my hand in return. “No. I’m grateful.”
His tone was unsettlingly calm, as though he were discussing a stranger. “It’s the first time in twenty years someone has stood up to her for me.”
Only then did I notice his eyes held no anger, no hurt–just a quiet, weary kind of release.
It was the look of a child who had finally let go of the last hope he’d placed in his mother.
“You know,” Kade’s gaze deepened, his voice steady, “when I was young, she was always distant. Every time, I thought I’d done something wrong.”
He turned toward me, a faint, almost invisible smile touching his lips. “Today was the first time someone ever had my back like that.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but just then Natalie walked over.
Traces of irritation still lingered on her face.
When she saw Kade, her tone softened with apology. “Kade, I/hope I wasn’t too harsh with your mother carlier-”
“Natalie.” Kade’s voice was sincere, clear. “Thank you.”
Natalie smiled warmly and pulled him into a firm hug. “Oh, honey. From now on, with me around, nobody’s going to give you or Nira a hard time.”
After she said it, the three of us shared a quiet, understanding smile.
“I’m going to grab some fruit from the cafeteria,” I said, glancing toward the hall. “I’ll be right back.”
“I’ll walk with you.” K. de fell into step beside ine.

Third–Person POV:
When Edith woke up and learned that Nira had been reunited with her birth mother, she was absolutely delighted.
Propped up against the hospital pillows, she beamed at Natalie and waved her over warmly. Come sit dear. Let’s have a proper chat.”
Natalie moved gracefully to the chair beside the bed. Edith took her hand gently. “You and Nira… you’ve only just found each other again?”
“That’s right, Edith.” Natalie nodded, her expression tender. “We were reunited very recently.”
A spark of genuine happiness lit Edith’s eyes. “That’s wonderful. Truly. That grandson of mine is one lucky man to be marrying someone like Nira.”
She leaned in a little, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial tone. “So, Natalie… what do you think about getting these two married soon?”
Natalie’s smile was knowing. “What did you have in mind, Edith?”
“I’d love to see it happen as soon as we can,” Edith said, eagerness bright in her voice. “What about next month? The wisteria out at the family estate will be in full bloom then–it would make a beautiful setting for a ceremony.”
Gently, Natalie rested a hand on Edith’s shoulder as she tried to sit up farther. “Edith, your recovery is what matters most right now. The wedding plans can wait until you’re stronger.”
“Oh, nonsense,” Edith insisted, shaking her head. “This old body can wait, but that boy of mine shouldn’t have to.”
She glanced toward the door and dropped her voice again. “You have to understand, he’s always been so reserved, so guarded. It’s not easy for him to let someone in. As his grandmother, I just want to see him happy while I still can…”
Natalie couldn’t help a soft laugh at Edith’s enthusiasm. “Don’t worry, Edith. I can see how genuine Kade is with Nira.”
“Just tell me what you need!” Edith said generously. “The Howell family will make sure it’s an occasion to remember.”
Natalie smiled warmly. “Edith, all those details aren’t what’s important. I only want the two of them to have a happy life together.”
