The agitation Baar had just forced down surged back up. He opened his mouth to tell her to leave, but the words stuck in his throat, blocked by an indescribable sense of contentment.

The black serpent at her feet slithered up Margaret’s calf and rested its head on her knee like an adoring

pet.

Gary watched the whole thing from the side. The look on Baar’s face was priceless. He clicked his tongue and shook his head to himself.

Margaret felt Baar’s stare crawling over her skin. She ignored it and started laying out the plan.

“When I walk out of here, I’ll act drained. She turned to Gary. “You back me up. We tell them the purification got halfway but I ran out of strength, Had to pause. I’ll continue in a couple of days.”

Gary rubbed his chin. “Why not just say it’s hopeless? You tried, but there was nothing you could do. The mole would be completely off our backs.”

Margaret gave him the look she’d give a slow student. “I’m SSS-class. If even I say there’s no saving him, then Baar’s a dead man walking. If Kiran is the mole and he hears that, he doesn’t have to lift a finger. He just waits in the shadows for news of Baar’s death. If he doesn’t move, how do we catch him?”

She tapped the arm of her chair. “If I say Baar’s half-cured-that he can still be saved, but it’ll take time- that’s when Kiran’ll panic. And when he panics, he’ll try to finish the job. Even if he’s not bold enough to strike openly on the base, he’ll come to me. He’ll want to feel out how much I really know.”

Kiran was her ex-husband. In that schemer’s eyes, the old Margaret had been a brainless, smitten lapdog. He’d absolutely use their history to try to worm information out of her.

She reached down and patted the silver medical case at her feet.

“We tell them I gave Baar a heavy sedative to stabilize him. He’s in a deep sleep now.” She looked at Gary. “Can you alter the feed in the isolation room upstairs?”

“No problem.” Gary nodded. “It’s all holographics. The spiritual power radiation is real, but the visuals can be adjusted on the fly. The camera angle’s fixed too. You can only see the area right by the glass.”

“Good.” Margaret set her hands on her knees. “Then we wait for Ki- the mole to come to us.”

She bent to grab the medical case. When she straightened up, Baar’s eyes were locked on the silver box, his expression dark.

Margaret paused. She figured he didn’t like being on the wrong end of a syringe. No top-tier male wanted to feel like someone was keeping a leash on him.

“That’s from Cheiron, isn’t it?” Baar’s voice cut through before she could speak.

Margaret blinked, “Yeah. So?”

Baar’s face clouded over. The temperature around him dropped. “You trust him that much? You took something from him without even knowing what’s inside, and you flew into a warzone with it?”
