Margaret didn’t lean on him. Not yet. No point acting before the curtain went up. But she didn’t push him away either.
Behind them. Baar watched Gary’s hand hovering just under Margaret’s arm. His gold slit-pupiled eyes narrowed to dangerous lines. The pressure in the isolation room plummeted.
Primo was having the time of its life. “Host! Baar’s staring at Gary’s hand like he’s about to hack it off! He’s definitely jealous. Lord Jewett is doomed! Lieutenant Pierce is doomed!”
Margaret kept walking. She didn’t even glance back.
“Jealous?” She let out a cold laugh in her head. “He’s got post-frenzy brain damage.”
The elevator doors slid open, Margaret thought back to the surveillance feed-Gary standing there with that calm, popcorn-ready expression while Baar’s serpent smashed itself bloody. The guy had zero acting
instincts.
She lowered her voice. “When we get up there, you need to look heavier. Like the world’s ending. And squeeze out a couple of tears if you can.”
Gary felt the murderous glare burning into his back from behind. His mouth twitched. “I’ll try.”
The elevator hummed upward. As the doors slid open, Gary stepped out first. He took a breath, his fingers flying over a control panel hidden in a camera blind spot, punching in a long string of top-clearance commands with practiced ease.
Margaret walked straight into the glass-walled chamber. Gary pulled up the holographic console and made the frenzied spirit beast in the projection whip its massive serpent head around, fixing its stare on her.
She stopped just outside the safety line and raised both hands, her brow furrowing. The way she carried herself-like she was pouring out a tidal wave of spiritual power-had Gary staring.
After a moment, she flipped open the silver medical case with one hand. Her gaze skimmed right past the red high-concentration sedative. Her fingers veered instead to a corner of the case and plucked out the most basic compound vitamin injector in the kit.
She shot Gary a look.
Gary clocked the injector in her hand and understood instantly. He slammed his fingers across the virtual keyboard. In the holographic feed, the berserk serpent let out a deafening roar and lunged at her.
The split second before its fangs touched her, Margaret drove the vitamin shot clean into the projection’s
neck.
“Down,” she said, the word barely more than a breath.
Gary hit enter in perfect sync. The holographic serpent convulsed twice, then crashed to the ground.
Margaret drew a deep breath. Her ramrod-straight shoulders collapsed. Her eyes went unfocused, the light draining out of them.

Gary jumped right in. He rushed to her side and caught her elbow, furrowing his brow tightly just as she’d told him. Together they stumbled out,

“They hadn’t gone far past the isolation zone when the medical major general from earlier came rushing toward them.
He felt the pressure still thick in the air and kept his distance, craning his neck from several paces away. Lieutenant Pierce, Commander Iverson-how is he?”
“He’s alive,” Gary kept his voice low and rough. “Barely. Lady Margaret burned through everything she had. She managed to suppress about half the frenzy. But she’s completely drained. Her spiritual realm is near collapse. We had to suspend the purification.”
The medical officer let out a long breath, eyes reddening. Half the frenzy had been suppressed—that alone was a miracle. He looked at Margaret slumped against Gary, her face ashen. His face twisted with raw gratitude. like a man pulled back from the brink. aled back from the brink.
“And after this—”
