One of the major generals couldn’t help asking. “Lieutenant Pierce, who’s this?”
“Lady Margaret, Commander Iverson’s wife and the galaxy’s only SSS-class female.” Gary didn’t even look up. He repeated his standard line. “Commander Iverson’s condition is stable for now, but the purification’s only half done. Zone Al is off-limits for the next few days. Stay clear.”
The major generals sucked in a breath and nodded quickly.
Kiran stood among them, his gaze sweeping over Margaret’s pale face without a flicker of expression. He said nothing, just lowered his head with the rest and stepped aside.
Margaret cracked her eyes open. Kiran was there. She let out a cold laugh in her head and slumped back against Gary. He helped her past them.
Once they were out of sight. Gary stopped in front of a door. He raised his wrist and swiped his Holo- bracelet across the lock.
“Beep! Identity confirmed.”
The door slid open.
“Lady Margaret, this is Commander Iverson’s room. Highest clearance on the base. You can rest here for
now.”
Margaret straightened up and gave him a sidelong look. “You have access to Baar’s room? The two of you must be close.”
Gary threw his hands up. “Please don’t start rumors. Standard adjutant clearance. For emergency reports.
That’s it.”
They stepped inside. The room was pure Baar-cold, sparse, not a single unnecessary item in sight. Black bedsheets, a gray metal wardrobe, and a row of razor-sharp combat knives mounted on the wall.
The door clicked shut. Margaret’s frail act vanished. She walked over to the narrow bed, sat down without ceremony, and flicked at the sheets.
“I’m starving.” She started giving Gary orders like she’d been doing it forever. “I brought luggage. It’s still on the ship. Timothy packed me food. Have someone bring it here.”
“Got it.” Gary headed for the door but stopped short and turned back, frowning. “Wait. I can’t just leave. What if the mole shows up? If so much as a hair on your head gets hurt, Commander Iverson will chop me into pieces.”
Margaret rolled her eyes and flopped back onto the bed. “Are you stupid? If you’re standing guard outside. how is Kiran supposed to come sniffing around?”
Gary opened his mouth. She had a point. He still didn’t like it.
“Fine,” he said. “I’ll have someone bring your things. Then I’ll find a spot nearby. Out of sight.”
“Whatever. Just don’t bother me while I’m eating.” She waved him off like waving off an annoyance.

Not long after, two logistics soldiers came in, hauling three massive temperature-controlled crates. They set them down, kept their eyes glued to the floor, and hurried out.
Margaret flipped open the first crate and dug out a pack of meat floss crackers. She tore it open and shoved one in her mouth. The crunch, the savory flavor-she closed her eyes in contentment.
Her Holo-bracelet started buzzing nonstop.
It had actually gone off several times back in the isolation room, but she’d been too busy acting to check.
She opened StarChat. The unread messages had exploded.
At the top was a barrage from Timothy-dozens of messages, all crying and praying emojis, mixed in with “Did you land safely?” “Any insectoids?” “How’s the food on the front?”
Margaret bit into another cracker and typed back one-handed, “Arrived safe. Eating your crackers. They’re amazing.”
Below that was one from Cheiron. “By my count, you should have arrived by now. Everything going smoothly? Hope you didn’t need what’s in the medical case.”
