She answered Primo in her head, her tone cool. “You don’t get it. Kiran’s paranoid. If I’d said yes, he’d smell a trap. The more I shut him out, the more he’ll think I’m hiding something. He won’t stay away.”

Right on cue, two soft knocks tapped against the door, == |||

“Who’s there?” Margaret raised her voice, threading just the right note of wariness and exhaustion through

A beat of silence passed. Then a low voice sounded-the kind that crawled under her skin.

“It’s me.”

Margaret’s hand froze on the cracker.

It was Kiran’s voice.

She glanced at the time on her Holo-bracelet. Less than thirty seconds since she’d sent that “No.”

This Margaret just found it funny.

“I’m fine.” She gave him nothing.

Her coldness didn’t faze Kiran. He stepped closer.

“The front is nothing like Prime Planet. The environment here is brutal.” He looked down at her, his voice dropping into something carefully warm. “You’re under the highest protection now. You shouldn’t be risking yourself in a place like this.”
