Margaret lifted her gaze and met Tyrone’s eyes. There was a clear, unsubtle meaning hidden in those green irises,

The black market’s information network stretched across the entire galaxy. As black market operatives, there was no way Tyrone and Quentin were just discussing regular Starnet news. He’d meant more than he’d said he probably had inside information official channels could never dig up.

She would have to talk to him alone later.

Margaret caught his meaning right away. She picked up a spoon and opened the dessert box, then scooped up a spoonful and took a bite. It was orange flavored, sweet and light, with no cloying aftertaste.

“It’s definitely not safe out there,” Margaret said after swallowing her bite. She steered the conversation firmly back on track. “But the royal family’s banquet is the day after tomorrow. I’m Prince Greven’s guest. The Empire will keep me safe, won’t it?”

That line was her quiet signal to Baar and Timothy-they didn’t need to say too much in front of Tyrone and Quentin.

She turned to Cheiron and Baar, her tone steady. “The banquet will be broadcast galaxy-wide. All top officials from the Council and the Imperial Household will be there. Even if things are dangerous out there, nothing bad will happen at a royal family event.”

Baar huffed. He was a straight shooter, and he hated all this roundabout, coded talk. But since Margaret had spoken up, he didn’t press the issue any further.

Cheiron sat nearby and said nothing. But his gray eyes behind his glasses flicked toward Tyrone and Quentin. He was turning something over in his mind.

“Enough,” Margaret said, rubbing her temples with a tired sigh. “It’s not like we’re going to war. Go back to whatever you were doing. I’ve got this handled.”

She glanced over at Tyrone and gave him a pointed look.

Tyrone caught the signal immediately. He stood up politely and brushed the wrinkles off his clothes.

“Get some rest, Ms. Greene. Call us if you need anything,” he said with an innocent smile. He turned and gestured for Quentin to follow him up to the second floor.

The impromptu meeting in the living room broke up on a sour note,

Timothy tried to linger by Margaret and say more, but Baar grabbed him by the back of the collar and hauled him right off his feet.

“If you’ve got time to waste, Mr. Hurst, go check if Greven’s infiltrated any of the Hurst Group’s properties. Don’t drag us down later,” Baar said, issuing the order bluntly.

Timothy pulled free and straightened his collar. He let out a cold laugh. “Don’t worry about me. The Hurst Group’s books are way cleaner than your military’s budget.”

Cheiron stood up and gathered the water glasses from the table.

Bhedule with you tomorrow,” he said to Margaret, his voice gentle.

Margaret nodded and turned to head upstairs.

The hallway on the villa’s second floor was lined with thick carpet. Every step landed without a single

sound.

“Host, are you actually going?” Primo muttered in her head. “It’s the middle of the night. You alone with one guy… no, two guys… That looks really bad. If Baar finds out-you know how jealous he gets-he’ll tear this whole building down.”

“Shut up,” Margaret shot back in her mind. “I’m going there for business.”

She raised her hand and knocked on Tyrone’s bedroom door.

When the door swung open, the room was pitch black-no lights were on at all.

Margaret frowned from the doorway, “Trying to save me money on the electric bill?”

A soft laugh drifted out of the darkness.

It was Tyrone.

“Saving resources is a virtue,” he said.

Margaret stepped inside, and the door clicked shut behind her. Once her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she spotted someone shifting in the far corner.

Quentin stood against the wall. His white hair stood out even in the dark, and his red eyes were dim but impossible to ignore. He didn’t say a word. He just set a sealed metal box on the table.

Tyrone sat on the other side of the room, half-buried in shadow.

Margaret pulled out a chair and sat down, tapping her fingers once on the tabletop. “Spit it out. You didn’t summon me here at this hour just to buy me a late-night snack.”

“We’ve got snacks, too,” Tyrone said. “But I figure you’d rather hear about Greven right now.”

Margaret lifted her gaze. “Talk.”

“The banquet’s a trap,” Tyrone said.

“I know it,” Margaret replied flatly.

“It’s not just about capturing you,” Tyrone said, dropping his usual joking tone entirely. “They want to test the upper limit of your purification ability in public.”

Margaret frowned. “What do you mean?”

Tyrone tapped the table once, projecting a file onto its surface. A faint holographic screen lit up, casting cold blue light across all three of their faces.

It showed a list of names, every single one marked in red.
