Tyrone closed the holographic display, his tone unusually serious. “Greven’s insane. He wants to tear down the line between species. Once he gets away with this, the whole galaxy goes down with him. The black market runs on business, not charity—but none of that matters if the world falls apart first.”
Margaret raised an eyebrow. “So you’re betting on me?”
Tyrone said, “You’re the eye of the storm right now. Whoever controls you controls the whole future of this game.
“I’m not some chip anyone can control.” Margaret let out a cold laugh. “I’m the one sitting at the table, playing the hand.”
Tyrone watched her, a flicker of approval crossing his green eyes. “That’s exactly why we want to stay by your side.”
Quentin slid the metal box across the table toward her. “For you.”
Margaret opened it. Inside lay a small silver-gray cartilage stud, so tiny it barely stood out,
Tyrone explained, “That stud holds three nerve-paralyzing darts. Anyone below SSS-class goes completely immobile in ten seconds. Even SSS-class targets get frozen for two to three seconds.”
Margaret picked up the stud and examined it. It was perfectly crafted, with no extra decorations at all.
She said, “What’s the black market’s warranty like? I don’t want to press the button and end up shooting myself in the ear.”
Tyrone finally offered a laugh. “I modified it myself. You won’t die from it.”
Margaret grew more wary. “That doesn’t sound like a guarantee. That sounds like a liability disclaimer.”
Quentin spoke up out of nowhere, “I tested it.”
Margaret turned to look at him.
Quentin added, flat and matter-of-fact, “I shot Tyrone with it.”
Margaret paused, speechless for a beat.
That was a surprisingly convincing proof of concept,
She clipped the stud onto her left car. The cool metal pressed against her skin, giving her a strange sense of security
“Spit it out. What do you want in return?” she asked.
Tyrone didn’t answer. Quentin didn’t move either.
In the dark room, their presence felt heavy and close, pressing in on her from both sides.
Margaret leaned back in her chair. “Money? Resources? Or do you want me to do purification for you?”

Tyrone said. “We want two spots.”
“Sh
Margaret asked, “Spots for what?”
Tyrone stared at her intently. “Spots by your side.”
The room went completely silent. Even the ventilation system seemed to hold its breath.

Margaret couldn’t make out his expression. She could only hear his voice, much lower and rougher than usual.
Tyrone smiled. “Quentin and I already match you. Since the Central Brain’s results aren’t going to change, why don’t we both get something out of this? I can make sure the black market gives you intel, manpower, and an escape route. I’ll handle all the dirty work you can’t be seen doing. Quentin handles the killing.”
“And taking hits for you,” Quentin added.
Margaret went quiet for a few seconds, then couldn’t hold back her reaction. “Is every job interview in the black market this intense?”
Tyrone replied calmly, “Competition’s tough.”
“Fair point.” Margaret nodded. “I’ve already got three people on my team, and none of them are exactly low-maintenance.”
Tyrone pressed on. “What’s the hiring criteria?”
Margaret stated, “Only one rule. Never betray me.”
In the dark. Tyrone made a soft sound of acknowledgment. “Got it.”
Margaret watched them for a moment. Tyrone and Quentin were sharp-and dangerous. But right now, dangerous people were exactly what she needed most.
She turned and headed straight for the door, “You can have the spots, but you start as outside contractors
first.
Tyrone called out after her, “What about pay?”
Margaret didn’t look back, “Room and board.”
Tyrone couldn’t help laughing. For the first time that night, he sounded like his usual, teasing self. “Generous boss.””
“Hosi, that was so cool!” Primo shouted in her head. “You’ve got those two black around your finger.”

“Cut the flattery, Margaret shot back. “Scan that list. See if there’s anything in the System Mall we can use”
Primo replied, “Got it. But Host, if we use system items right now, will the main systein give us a warning?”
“Greven’s shoving bug parts into people’s spines. If the main system doesn’t go after him, why the hell would it come after me?” Margaret asked.
