Margaret froze.

Not Cheiron? Then who is it?

“Host.” Primo spoke up. “I don’t have access to the security cameras, but I can sense something outside your door. There’s no hostility coming from it.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow. “Something?”

“That’s right. It’s not human-just a very calm, steady energy signature.”

Margaret hesitated for a moment before telling the smart home system to turn on the lights. She pushed back the covers and got out of bed.

Barefoot, she walked across the soft carpet toward the door, took a quiet breath, and turned the handle.

The hallway outside was dimly lit. Waiting there was a round, rolling service robot, white and about waist- high, with a soft blue ring of light glowing on top of its dome.

When it noticed the door open, its rounded head tilted slightly. A gentle, almost childlike mechanical voice greeted her: “Good evening. I’m Blanc, your home assistant robot. Would you like me to clean the room tonight?”

Margaret just stared. She looked down at the robot. The robot looked back up at her, its electronic eyes blinking slowly. Even though it was just a machine, there was something almost eager in its motionless

gaze.

She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding-and then, despite herself, she smiled.

Primo chuckled softly in her mind. “You’ve spent too long around those ex-husbands of yours, Host. You’ve developed a kind of…knock anxiety. Every time someone’s at the door, you assume it’s trouble.”

Margaret paused, letting the words sink in.

He was probably right.

Back in the homes of those three ex-husbands, a knock never meant anything good-whether it was Ardon about to start an argument, Raikes there to give another order, or Kiran dropping off some paperwork she had to sign. Not once had a knock brought something pleasant.

Without even noticing, she’d trained herself to see every knock as a threat.

“Good evening,” Blanc repeated gently, still waiting in the hallway. “Shall I clean your room tonight?”

Margaret looked down at the polite little machine. Part of her felt amused-but underneath that, there was a touch of sadness.

“No, thank you,” she said softly. “The room is just fine.”
