“Right! See!” Primo’s voice practically vibrated with “I finally got it right” excitement. “So then why did Mr. Jewett do it on purpose, host?”
“Competitive drive too, obviously.”
Primo went silent.
Margaret laughed, reached for her Holo-bracelet on the coffee table, and spun it around in her hand.
“Alright, stop overthinking it,” she said, her tone lazy. “Why bother? There are five people on that match list. I’d run myself ragged analyzing every single one.”
“So what are you going to do?”
“Do nothing” Margaret put the Holo-bracelet on her wrist and stood up. “First, I’m going to check out the houses. Three properties just got assigned. I need to see which one I want to live in.”
She got up from the couch and walked toward the door. At the entryway, she stopped in front of the full- length mirror and looked at herself. She was wearing a simple light colored long sleeve shirt and dark pants, her hair pulled back in a casual ponytail.
“Host, you’re going out like that?” Primo’s voice dripped with disbelief. “You’re a 3S-class female now. At least…”
“At least what?” Margaret looked down at herself. “What’s wrong with this outfit? It’s clean, it’s comfortable, it’s not revealing. Good enough to go out in.”
With that, she pulled the door open. The sunlight outside was lovely, warm and golden, spilling onto the little path in front of the house. Margaret squinted, summoned a ride on her Holo-bracelet, and started walking toward the neighborhood entrance.
She’d barely made it a few steps when something caught her eye. At a nearby intersection, two people were standing.
Phoebe wore a pale pink dress, her long, silky hair flowing, her posture elegant,
Raikes had silver grey hair, tall, with a ramrod straight stance. Everything about him screamed aristocratic refinement.
Margaret’s steps faltered. Her brow furrowed almost involuntarily.
Again? Yesterday Ardon, today Raikes? And both times with Phoebe tagging along?
“Host! It’s Raikes! And Phoebe!” Primo’s voice exploded in her head.
Margaret rolled her eyes internally and took half a step back, ready to turn around and go back inside.
Her mood had actually been pretty good today. Three houses assigned. A sixty-thousand-credit subsidy. Sure, Ardon had been a pain yesterday, but Cheiron’s comeback had left her feeling satisfied. She didn’t

“Margaret!” But Phoebe’s eyes were sharper than a security camera. That soft, syrupy voice chased after her from behind, dripping with fake delight. “What a coincidence!”
Margaret didn’t turn around. Her hand was already on the door handle. But Phoebe clearly wasn’t about to let her off the hook. Her footsteps were getting closer.
“Host, she’s coming.” Primo’s voice had a hint of gritted teeth. “What do you want to do? Are you going back inside?”
Margaret took a deep breath. Go back inside? Why? This was Cheiron’s front door, not Phoebe’s territory. Why should she have to hide?
She took her hand off the door handle and turned around.
Phoebe was already two or three steps away, wearing her signature gentle smile, her eyes curved in crescents, looking completely harmless.
“Margaret, you’re going out too today?” She tilted her head, her voice deliberately familiar. “What a coincidence. Mr. Walker and I were just passing by. I didn’t expect to run into you.”
Margaret looked at her and said nothing.
Passing by? Passing by Cheiron’s front door?
Phoebe lived in this neighborhood too, sure. But Cheiron was a 3S-class male. His residence was isolated, with no other houses nearby. The road in front of his place led straight to the neighborhood entrance. Unless you came here on purpose, there was no such thing as “passing by.”
Margaret couldn’t be bothered to call her out. She just said “mmhm” and looked past Phoebe at the silver grey figure slowly approaching.
