Baar took a deep breath, tamping down the urge to riddle Timothy with bullets. He strode into the courtyard, his face dark.

Margaret stood at the threshold of the main house. She was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday. her hair casually tied back, and she was still holding the napkin she’d used to wipe her mouth.

Timothy rushed up the steps and stopped.

He tilted his head back, his ice blue eyes fixed intently on Margaret. His smile bloomed across his face.

“Dear!” The word rolled off his tongue as naturally as breathing, without the slightest hint of embarrassment. He thrust the enormous bouquet of roses toward her. “I didn’t know what you liked, so I brought something a little tacky. Hope you don’t mind.”

Margaret cringed internally every time he said “dear,” but she couldn’t exactly argue with it. Technically, she was his mate. She looked at the bouquet shoved in her face. In the Interstellar Era, cultivating plants was extremely difficult. A bouquet of fresh red roses in full bloom, with dewdrops still on the petals, was easily worth an average house on the Prime Planet.

Margaret didn’t take the flowers. She just looked at him. “Mr. Hurst?”

“Just Timothy is fine. Or you can call me honey. I wouldn’t mind.” Timothy didn’t seem bothered when she didn’t take the bouquet. He withdrew his hand naturally and held the roses at his side. “I messaged yesterday that I’d arrive before 8:00 PM tonight, but I couldn’t wait that long. I pushed all my afternoon meetings. You don’t mind me showing up early, do you?”

He had the whole “you can’t hit a guy with a smile” routine down to a science.

Before Margaret could answer, heavy footsteps sounded behind her, military boots on stone.

Baar reached the bottom of the steps and stopped next to Timothy.

He was a little taller than Timothy. He didn’t look at Timothy. His eyes cut straight across the empty space and landed on Margaret’s face.

He didn’t speak. But the emotions in those eyes were complicated. Frustration. Reluctance. And a weird kind of… hurt?

Margaret didn’t know how she was reading that emotion on the face of this commander, but his lips

pressed into a straight line, radiating a clear sulkiness. | |-|

“Mr. Iverson,” Margaret spoke first, breaking the standoff. “You showed up early too.”

“I didn’t make it in first.” His voice was low and rough, his tone carrying undisguised defeat. “Sorry. I broke my word.”

Margaret blinked. She hadn’t expected that to be what Baar was actually bothered by. This competitive drive, this stubbornness, didn’t match the decisive, battle-hardened image the Interstellar Forum had painted of him. him.

Beside him, Timothy let out a soft laugh, his voice cool. “What does it matter who walks through the door

first, Commander? The important thing is who stays in this house longer,”

Baar’s head whipped around, his gaze sharp.

Timothy met his eyes without flinching. The smile on his lips didn’t waver, but there was no warmth in his blue gaze.

The air grew thick with tension. The spiritual power of two 3S-class males clashed invisibly, rattling the leaves of the tree in the courtyard,

Margaret stood on the threshold, looking down at them. Suddenly, she understood why the Empire had chosen such a remote location for her house. If an ordinary person walked by right now, they’d be in the hospital for a week thanks to these two.
